I'm building a carport type patio cover out of steel and would like some suggestions for a good rust proofing/paint besides a rattle can. Brush on would be OK too since I don't have a big spray rig. Thanks, Mike
Why don't you spray it with a 2-part epoxy like they use in the beds of pick-up trucks?
You can thin it down a bit to spray a lighter coating since you don't need the same type of protection that you'd need in a pick-up bed. I've used it for several projects and love it. You don't need a big air compressor to spray it, just a 5hp unit will do the trick. If you buy the stuff on ebay (Liner X-Treeme or Rattleguard are a couple different brands I see commonly on ebay) they even include the spray gun! I've used Liner X-Treeme as an undercoating on my snowcat, as waterproofing over wood, and in the back of one of my trucks and am very happy with it. I'll be using it again on the roof of my snowcat too (maybe this coming weekend).
I used my cheezy 5HP 20gallon air compressor to power a 20$ walmart automotive type spray gun to spray oil based enamel bought at the home depot and tinted to an olive drab at their paint counter. It took 2 gallons cut 50/50 with mineral spirits to paint a 20 foot shipping container inside and out. Yes, painting the inside of a shipping container with oil based paint is not much fun but it went quickly.
It was very easy to apply the oil based paint with the spray gun and not get sags, runs, or brush marks.
I've seen your shop/garage and what you can do. If you don't have an air compressor then I think you need one.
I've got a compressor, just not where this project is being built. I'll paint most of it at home though and touch up when I get it welded together. I've used that bedliner stuff and like it, I might go that route.
I assume this patio is part of your house. If yes, you'll need to check the lead content of the paint. I'm not positive but I think that law is federal and might apply to country houses also. The steel barn paints do contain lead. It would be a hassel if you wanted to sell the house someday.
No, it's out in the country, gonna be a shady place to get out of the weather and park the tractor at night when we're up there. I think I'll just brush on some enamel, just need to keep the rust away on the frame. I'll post some pix next week, will be welding it together this weekend.
