Do the cog railway. I think it just reopened this year after several years of being shut down. I've rafted the Royal Gorge and the part of the deep gorge is relatively short.
I have reservations for next week. Looking forward to it.

Where are you headed from Cheyenne? I grew up in Laramie and can give you some pointers about attractions, if you’re interested.

Sorry, just reading this now. We went back to Estes, CO and last night drove to Moab, UT

My uncle worked the railroads, he was involved in a freak accident and almost died, survived the ordeal and retired. Amazing story.

Needs the weeds trimmed around it...
My wife thought that, too.
Although you can’t see in the pictures, there was a HS class reunion getting set up to be held there that night.
I was a little underwhelmed at the grounds care the old girl was being given.

Had to wait in a tanker train this evening at the Oxbow Park crossing, Tried to beat it to the crossing, but caught a light and got there just as the gates went down.
Three engines in the lead, a hopper car, 100 tank cars, a hopper car, two DP units, a hopper car, another 100 tank cars, and finally a trailing hopper on the tail end.
Five power units, four hoppers and 200 tank cars.
I would guess it was over two miles ling.

And it you had beat it with plenty of time to spare, you wouldn't have seen an interesting train, or made an addition to this thread.

:)

Here is an old railway that has been turned into tour train.

Nantahala Gorge Excursion | See What Beauty Truly Is on This Scenic Train Tour

Some friends of mine used to take restored maintenance cars up/down it for fun. They noted it was a little scary crossing Fontana Dam in an open door unit.
We used to go to NOC - Nantahala Outdoor Center area every year for whitewater paddling. We have been on that ride. It is very nice and one of them goes up the river (steam) and stops at the NOC where then was a hostel on the Application Trail. That area has great white water, lots of hiking, mountain biking and very scenic train.
