Tractor
Branson 4225h, Mahindra 2516, several Toro Wheel Horse 522xi machines.
I'm giving serious thought to purchasing a clean, 135 hour, TC26da. This tractor would be dedicated to 7 acre field mowing by my wife.

Question #1: The seller mentioned that if he brush hogs too much too quickly the machine will sometimes blow a fuse which STOPS the brush hog only. Is this a common safety feature? If so, I didn't know that a pto driven attachment would have some fused electric safety device. Is the seller correct?

Question #2: This machine has NO LOADER and NO ATTACHMENTS. It has been garage kept most of its life but not all. It looks good. The tractor will need a new battery and for my peace of mind a complete fluid/ filter service done by the local New Holland dealer (I'm not that mechanically inclined). Could you give me a realistic price range this tractor might fall within please? (I've read that used tractor asking prices at TractorHouse, etc. are often way too optimistic and don't reflect true selling prices).

Quick responses would be appreciated as I'd like to decide within a couple days.

Thanks for the help.

The tractor may have an electronic PTO rather than mechanical. Not sure about how the electrically switched PTO's work. It may be possible the fuse may have been replaced with a smaller amp fuse at some point.
Tractorhouse does have a few 26da's but they have loaders so deduct a couple grand or so from their prices for no loader.

If you can buy a loader for $1,000, you must have won the jackpot. Ive heard the TC26 only has 2 ranges. That would be a deal breaker for me. The missing M range is where 60% of my time would be.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I too am debating the missing mid-range, however, this tractor will only be used to mow. Can a small tractor like this mow in high range at modest speed or am I forced to stay in low throughout? FYI, we have another compact tractor with a 3 range hydrostat and loader that does our non-mowing chores well. I prefer to mow without a loader on a tractor. I also prefer not to run-up mowing hours on our current tractor, therefore the consideration of another machine. (I'm probably nuts about this, you can confirm this if you like)

I'd guess a new New Holland loader must be $4,000 +/-. I'd think this used machine without a loader has much reduced appeal to buyers and therefore I've thought I should reduce about $4,000 from the Tractorhouse asking prices. And that's before negotiating! Am I dreaming?

Thanks for the continued help with this. (I don't have money to burn on this, its got to make sense)

I think you could mow in H only if the area was flat and wide open. Any slope to it or obstacles like bushes to go around, H will be too fast. My mowing tractor has a 9 speed standard transmission. I can always find the perfect gear. Tough to beat.

And no, it is great having a loader tractor and another tractor for mowing. Then you don't have to keep switching implements. Every time I try to mow with the loader tractor, it puts so much weight on the front that I need 4WD to make it up the hill. But in 4WD (R-1s) it makes a huge mess turning. Meanwhile my dedicated 2WD mower without a loader easily goes up the same hill. (R-3s). On the other hand, I use a rear blade so often with the front loader, I rarely take it off. And do not have to, since that tractor does not mow. So, I say have two. :)

The TC26da is only 44" wide. Is that a concern from a stability (tippy?) standpoint? Looks like a tall, narrow tractor and my Wife commented on this as she will be the operator of the machine for mowing.

A co-worker of my Wife's has a well-liked Mahindra 2516 in their household and it is 54.5" wide and a little lower. Gives the appearance of a more stable (safer) machine.

Are we over thinking this?
