We are looking to start this in our area in texas. We are wondering should we be more worried about machine engine horsepower, hydraulic flow or hydraulic horsepower. Thank you for any information yall can offer. Also has anyone experienced any problems with the magnum heads since bradco bought them out.

Dirty Works might be able to chime in on this...Think he just sold his MAGNUM...Im assuming your talking of MULCHING heads....Welcome to the net...

That is correct. Bradco is now in charge of the magnum heads. It does not look like they have made many changes. Do you have any words of advice as to the horsepower question.

Depends on how much and how fast you want to handle....If i had to start over-I'd go with a minimum of 100 HP machine and minimum 30 GPM of flow..These guys will tell you how much larger you can go from there.......

Thanks for your help. Hopefully some of them will reply with there opinions. We are looking at a machine but want to make a smart buy. There is nothing like making an expensive mistake. Again thanks for your information.

Welcome to the site. Paint a picture for us.

1. What are you mulching?
2. What size lots are you targeting?
3. Is this a starup business?
4. How many guys running mulchers in your area?
5. What are they running and what are they charging?
6. Is your tractor going to dictate the truck or vis-versa?
7. Being on the other end of the business now, what kind of finances are you willing to throw at this venture?
8. Are you going to be running the equipment or hired operators?

Okay enough for now. Nobody asked me these questions when I started. And they all matter.

Robbie,

Thanks for asking questions and i hope I have answered all of them for you.

1) We will be mulching youpons and a mixture of hard woods and pine. 2) Our target will be one to twenty acre lots.
3) Yes this is a startup buisness.
4) Currently we know of three guys in this area but none one hour north of us.
5) They are runningthe skid steer machines (various) with different heads ranging from fecon to magnums and the average is 135 an hour.
6) I own a 2002 dodge one ton truck with a flat bed gooseneck trailer. No problems in the vehicle department.
7) We look to throw about 125K into the buisness.
8) We will be running the equipment at all times to hopefully keep down on operator error and total disrespect for the equipment.

We are currently looking at a Case 450 CT with the BIC super Hy-flow hydraulic system. It comes with 82 engine horsepower 34 gpm at 4500psi and 89 hydraulic horsepower. It has a auxillary hydraulic cooler also. The head is a 165-5 magnum with a 60 inch cut and also a auxillary cooler. I think we are on the right track just trying to confirm. Thanks again for all of your help. Yall have been a great deal of help so far.

Everything is important. Hydraulic horsepower is nice but it requires engine horsepower to create HHP. My FTX-140 is rated at about 240HHP that is 100 HP more than the engine creates. But it requires an engine to turn the pumps, as you know hydraulics can be multiplied, how else could my 110lb wife help jack up my F-450. One issue that you left out is cooling if you are grinding dense material you will keep the engine and hydraulics at full cycle. If it is available on your machine get a reversing fan! I had on on my ASV and it kept everything clean as a pin. I have one on the hydraulic cooler on the 140 but the engine cooler does not have one, I have to pressure wash my radiator every two days in because of the dust out here. Good luck on your venture.

I will look into the reversing fan for the engine radiator. Thank you so much for the information. I can not wait to get started in the buisness. I will keep yall updated and let yall know how things are going in Texas. Again thanks alot.

The small machines are 12,000# and quickly go to 15-16,000 for like a Rayco 130/140. That means you will be towing 16-22,000#. Your Dodge may get by for a while, but around here you wouldn't go 3 exits on the highway without being stopped and weighed!

You may not have that issue (hopefully you don't!!), but it can be a shock to your wallet getting an overweight ticket, having to pay for someone to tow off your trailer and then getting a "pile on" ticket for all the pesky things like fire ext, triangles, med card, driver log...

Good luck in the new biz and avoid "stepping in it"!
