Hi, now that I'm having more and more types of oil to handle, I"m wondering what you guys do to handle pouring the different oil grades into your vehicles. Are you using a different funnel for each type of oil that your vehicles and other small engines take, or are you simply wiping the funnel and reuse it for any other type of oil? How about gas and oil? Same funnel or a different one then?

Thanks

Wow I use the same one for everything.....

i have 1 long spout and one stubby spout....for all oils. just clean in between (otherwise all sorts of junk accumulates).

I use two large and one small sizes of the special John Deere plastic funnels that have the screw-on caps on both ends. After use I don't even wipe them out; just leave a twist of paper towel in the small end, screw both caps on lightly, and set the funnel in a bucket with the others. By the time I want to use it again all the oil coating the inside of the funnel has flowed down and wicked into the twist of paper towel. No dirt or dust got in because of the caps. So that twist gets disgarded & the funnel is ready for use again.

I haven't cleaned a funnel since discovering that trick.

At least a different funnel for each "class" of fluid (fuel, crankcase oil, hydraulic oil, coolant, etc.) May have multiple funnels for the same "class" owing to different filler configurations (size, recessed, etc.). An example: The first funnel I used to fill my tractor fit tightly into the filler neck, especially with the weight of the jerry can. Air could not escape as fast as I poured so the funnel would fill and "burp". I found a funnel with a deep "Z" cross section (looks like a circular saw blade); the spaces allow air to vent, reducing spills.

i have 1 long spout and one stubby spout....for all oils. just clean in between (otherwise all sorts of junk accumulates).

How to clean? A rag would leave residue. A "solvent" (gasoline, mineral spirits, even water) might be incompatible with and contaminate the fluid unless one could reliably "dry" the funnel. I store my funnels narrow end up to minimize dust settling and with the wide end resting on a bar so clingage can drain.

I was not aware that these were available.

Sounds like, yet again, something that I never knew that I needed. :)

Thanks all. You gave great suggestions :)

I have several smaller funnels. They just get rinsed out with a more than adequate shot of brake clean just before each use. My large funnel gets stored in a 5 gallon pail with the lid on. That funnel is always clean so doesn't get rinsed at all unless I notice dirt on it. I use the same funnels for oil and antifreeze but they get a through rinse with brake clean before and after.

What do you do with the residue oil and brake cleaner that flow through?
