Question on Weigh Stations

Several questions here.
1. If I am towing a Kaw Mule on a landscape trailer, do I need to go thru the weigh station?
2. If I am driving a U-Haul, do I need to go thru the weigh station.

How big a Uhaul ?

Stop in and ask them. In fact, just for fun, stop at a few and see how many different answers you get.

Requirements may vary from state to state and throughout Canada. Each weigh station has a sign that says what you are required to do; just obey the signs. Normally U-Haul customers moving their own household goods are not required to stop, because this is not a commercial move. However, if a truck is over a certain weight it may be required to stop regardless of what is being carried.

Don't know how much clout to put into this one, it's from a trucker site.

Anyone renting a truck for personal use is not required to cross the scales, but the weigh masters suggest that rental trucks go ahead and exit at the weigh stations. The scale masters can't tell whether a rental truck is being used commercially or not, so they may chase down a rental truck that passes by the scale without stopping. Generally, a rental truck that obeys the weigh station speed limit will be directed into the bypass lanes and return to the freeway.

They may chase you down, but I doubt it, unless the signage makes it very clear (like all vehicle over 4 tons must weigh). assuming you do get chased down, I bet you could say "oops" and have to go weigh.

If the Uhaul has a medium truck cab, I'd probably pull in. believe all U-hauls are under 26k

Here are my personal rules for weigh stations. So far I've never had a problem.

I won't stop if all of the following conditions are met.

#1) I don't need a special license to drive what I've driving. (i.e. no CDL)
#2) I'm not getting paid to haul what I'm hauling.
#3) I'm not transporting any livestock accross state lines.

I've passed a lot of weigh stations with trailer in tow, and I've never been chased down.

The only time I've even come close to having an issue was when I was transporting my dad's horse accross state lines on a Labor Day and the coggin's test was a month past due. The station master gave me the red light. She looked at my out of date paperwork and sent me on my way.

If your Uhaul is big and loaded its always fun to see a DOT cop want to inspect the load ie watch you unload it so a drug dog can check it out, then tell you thanks.

If your renting big/looks like a big truck swing threw. with pickup and Atv trailer keep rolling.

They are going to have to catch me.. Then I am going to play dumb. If it does not have DOT numbers on the sides of the vehicle then I ain't going thru the scales.

I would never give permission to inspect a loaded UHaul. in a comercial vehicle, you've got no choice, but in a Uhaul, pretty sure they need permision.

I've also never heard of a cop telling you to unload, but they will leave you to clean up the mess afterward.
