Hi all, I have a small lawn tractor that I am trying to tech out myself.. The thing wont even turn over.. I put a tester on the starter solenoid and have power going to it.., but when the key is turned I have no power on the wire to the starter.. I know that there should be power running from the wire from the keyed ignition to the solenoid to turn it on.., but I am a novice and would like to understand the basics of a starter solenoid and ignition.. There should be some sort of power coming from the ignition.. Any ideas of how much power, and or if there might be a way to bypass everything to get her started so my lawn doesn't turn into a jungle.. Does anyone have any ideas or help that might point me in the right direction..? Thank you for your time!! Chris

Chris,
There is an override under the seat, really a switch in the seat that could be the problem. You can pull the plug off the switch and "jump" it then see if the starter engages.
If it has a clutch switch, check the switch and you can also bypass it.
If you find any of these to be defective, please replace them they are safety features that are needed!
What kind of mower is it?

You can bypass the starter & the safety switches by using jumper cables from a battery directly to the starter. Turn the key to the on position & put the ground on the frame & the red fom positive to the bolt on the starter.

You can always use the trick we used to replace the foot starter on the old tractors. Heres what you need.

1 roll of 10 gauge wire.
1 60 amp spring switch. (pushbutton)
2 heavy duty ring ends for the wire.
2 ends to connect to the switch. (depends on the switch)

A. Mount the switch in a conveniant position.
B. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
C. Cut enough wire to go from the solenoid to the switch. Cut two of these.
D. Install the ring connectors to one end of each wire.
E. Mount one wire to each pole of the solenoid.
F. Depending on the switch you bought install the proper connectors to the opposite end of the two wires you have installed on the solenoid in step "E".
G. Install the wires on the switch.
H. Carefully (using gloves and safety glasses in case you muffed it) re-connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
I. Turn the key to the "on" position and push the switch. Mower should start.

This might sound complicated but in real time takes about a half hour. All your really doing is jumping the solenoid in a "professional manner! LOL!!
