Question on R-134 automotive air conditioning

Can anyone refer me to a source for a low side adapter so that I can use my R-12 gauge set on a newer R-134 system? Really don't need or want to replace a hose set on my compound gauges, but am betting that a simple adapter is available somewhere and at a cheaper price.

When I stopped at a local NAPPA dealer today and asked, the guy looked at me and said, "They don't make them because of cross contamination problems." I was betting that he was wrong. Thanks!

I'm not sure about the availability of the kind of adapters you're talking about, but of course you can use the same gauges and manifold. And I'm not sure of the difference in the hoses. I know Matco Tools sells this Universal Manifold Gauge Set but it has separate hoses for each type of refrigerant. I think you may need to just buy a separate set of hoses for the R134A.

That NAPPA dealer gave you the correct answer. Cross contamination is the reason. Spring for a new set of hoses, they are not that expensive, or just buy the one pound can that comes with the hose. Can I interest you in some R-12???? I have a few 30# left over from when I had my shop 35 years ago. FYI, currently, you can get R-12 around $600 per 30lb "jug".

Now, I can remember back in or around 1998 it was going for about $1200 for that same jug.

Still debating if I want to stockpile a pallet of R-22 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is "virgin" pricing, not recycled.
