I have two very young fawns in my yard. Not much bigger than a golden lab, so just a few weeks old. So small that when they lay in the tall grass I can't see them until I'm almost on top of them. Almost ran over one yesterday mowing.

I try to mow very carefully and make sure I know where they are before I start so I can avoid those areas.

How long before they grow enough to move off into the woods?

I’d say less than a couple of weeks, seems like just a few days and they are up and mobile.

Meanwhile, you have your own Mutual of Omaha in your backyard. Enjoy!

I recall my wife and I were driving in a local state park and the tiniest fawn we've ever seen was trying to cross the road. Its mom was already across and encouraging to come along. If you've ever seen a young girl(or guy, hey, I don't care) trying to walk in high heels for the first time, that's what this little fawn did on the asphalt. Little peg legs one step at a time. Took it forever to get across the street. :)

They're already frolicking with Mom where she bothers to come by. For some reason she leaves them alone most of the day.

I say that singular, but I guess there are two moms. The fawns sleep about 60-100 feet from each other, so I don't think they're twins and I never see the two of them with one doe.

The deer on my property are seen on trail cams in groups trailing fawns. I hope they know whos baby is whos……i sure dont. I now have a mama moose and 2 babys on the trails. Have to pay close attention when out moving wood. She doesnt look too pleased at me.

Mom will leave them alone most of the day for weeks. We have them on our property every year. She leaves them hidden in grass during the day, she will come by and nurse them from time to time and they will play. Here it’s a month or more.

They will also place the twins in different locations, to help ensure both are not killed at the same time by a predator

Was out for a paddle this past Sunday and seen this fellow watching the lake while having a lookout high up.
