Are you using the more common 2-link V-bar chains, or what? Do you have problems with them getting down between the lugs on the R-1 ag tires? I've only used tire chains on ags up north, using a snowblade or snowblower, and this is a different application. In fact, I have a couple sets for smaller 23" tires but not these 26x12x12s.

Any recommended sources?

This heavier 1430 wants to "scoot" when mowing downhill, amidst the fresh-cut debris. I'm not really having traction problems climbing the slopes, carrying the mower -- just going downhill, mowing slowly. Oddly, the left front wheel seems more prone to sliding...

I haven't loaded the tires on this thing yet, but I doubt that would improve downhill braking. I've been considering loading the rears with WW fluid, more for ballast/weight, than for traction.

This heavier thing is far more prone to scooting/sliding than the lighter 425 with bigger wheel motors.

I ran chains on my PT for 5 years nonstop. Now, the tires underneath were not in the best of shape. I used these types of chains...

So it is hard to tell now that I have new tires and no chains on them, but I feel my traction and side hill traction is better currenlty without them.

I doubt you will accomplish much by loading our sized tires.

I think a big thing you should first look at is tire pressure and tire type. Can you tell us what type of tires you have on? Did you post photos?

I'm running 26x12x12 Tru Power R-1 ag lugs, at 10 PSI. They're essentially new...

I thought that diamond pattern might stay on top of the lugs better. Looking at these -- especially when you consider shipping costs.

I was considering loading the rears, more for ballast -- since another 150 lbs of weight back there, down low could help reduce the PT pucker...

The 10 psi sounds rather high for sideways on steep slopes. In my woods, the chains (studded diamond like Carl's) definitely help for going up and down steep hills but that is different than going up and down a grassy hill so hard for me to give you advice. It has been a number of years since I have done any significant steep mowing of grass.

Thanks Ken! I've thought of dropping the pressure to 8 or so, and see if that will help. I'd be a bit reluctant to go any lower running single rather than dual wheels.

Ken beat me too it, I would add that I tubed all my tires. Terri has me running 8lbs with 6ply and suggested 4 to 6 lbs with 4 ply and doing severe slopes. You probably have 4 ply.

Remember that you got a big heavy mower on front, it only helps to send you down the hill. Also, does your machine have Draft Control? On mine and Kens it is a switch that gently elevates the mower to increase traction.

No, I don't have draft control on this oldie. I think I'll go ahead and order those diamond style chains, and try dropping the pressure a bit...

Thanks, guys!

Don't have experience with 4 WD drive Power Trac but on two wheeled equipment chains provided improved rtaction while traveling up and down hills but seemed to reduce it on side hills. These were just standard tire chains.

Seems like most log skidders run the diamond style chains.

I run the skid steer tread tires on my 1445 with the diamond style chains, but not studded. Same source. (Thanks Ken!)

They make a huge difference for me when mowing on fresh cut thistle, which is pretty slick.

All the best,

Peter

My new tires have only seen dry clay, kinda dusty stuff. As it gets muddy this fall I will do a few testts with and without chains.
