I tore down my perkins 3-152 and put in sleeves and pistons. When I put it back together and went to set the valves none of them had any tappet clearance, which I thought was odd, but thought with a new head gasket that might explain it. I followed the manual on setting the valves -- TDC, adjust 1 2 3 and 5 valves. Rotate 360 and set 4 and 6. What I noticed after adjusting 4 and 6 is that all the valves, 1-6, were all closed. That just doesn't seem right, but on the other hand, obviously 1,2,3, and 5 would all be closed at the same time.

I'm wondering if I screwed up by originally setting the first set on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke, since all the valves were tight to start with.

Anybody every run into this?

G,Day Rford .
Your manual may or may not suggest tha you check the position of the crankshaft before adjusting the tappets.
step one remove the valve tappet cover slowly turn the engine over by hand till you seeBOTH THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER TAPPETS CLOSEDthen remove the small elongated rubber dust cover on the left hand side bellhousing adaptor plate and turn the engine slowly back and forward till you see the TDCmark ,adjust the valves like you said 12 thou cold 10 thou hot it is not super critical better a wee bit loose than tight My old dad used to say if you can hear them rattle they wont be to tight.
I would say you did set it 180 degrees out .
That should get you going .

Happy days
Hutch.

I was fine...motor started right up tonight. I found a good method to set valves on this engine and I checked what I had done against this method. Turn the crank clockwise (facing engine) until the tappets on the 4th and 6th valves (counting from front) are as high as they can go...(if you can see the timing mark you'll see you are at the TDC mark). Now set all the valves except the 4th and 6th. Make alignment marks on the crank pulley and timing cover and turn the crank pulley one revolution. Now adjust the 4th and 6th valves. On my engine its .012 cold, .010 hot. Vrooom.
