Hey all,

I have been eyeballing tandem disks for awhile now, looking to buy. I am looking for a used 8' to 10' drag type disk.

I have noticed that some of them have a smaller disk on the outside. What is the reason for this?

It isn't clear what you are talking about but "I THINK" what you are seeing is a MARKER that show's where you should put your front tire during next pass.

The smaller disc on the outside of the rear gangs is to prevent furrowing. (deeper rut). Usually found on units that will be used for finishing or final seedbed preparation.

Also I don’t think there is such a thing as tandem disc plow. A true disc plow is single ganged with much larger diameter discs than a disc harrow.

Smaller outside disc is for leveling purpose of the dirt on the side already disced. The front gang throws outward leaving a ridge and rear gang pulls dirt back, if a large disc is at outer end it would leave a deeper groove. The smaller disc pulls the ridge back in without leaving as deep a cut.

My largest disk has 22” blades with the outer blades on the rear being 18” to help level the deep cut left by the 22s.

The rear axles have this disc and it's purpose is to flip clods back in line that stray outside the reach of the rear disc that is part of the rear recovery system. You don't want it plowing, just scraping the surface.

You don't want it plowing, just scraping the surface. I added such to my current disc as it came without...just went to ASC and bought 2 longer axles, smaller discs, and spools to make up the same spacing (7") for the kicker disc.

What everyone here said is correct. Back when we tilled our soybean and wheat land we typically plowed in the fall and followed back with a "leveling disc" in the spring. Typically took a couple passes. In addition to the small outside disc we usually pulled a log we called a "drag" behind on the last pass. We then drilled followed by a cultipacker.
