Hey everyone,

I have a New Holland 1036 Stackliner. It puts out 70 bales at a time and my bale dimensions are 48"x14"x18" LWH so one stack is about 6'x8'x11'. I'm looking at getting a barn for my hay that's about a 60'x24'x16' or possibly larger and just had a few questions.

Will 16 feet give me enough clearance to stack hay inside a barn or will I need to go higher? How much clearance from the sides of the barn do you think I would need?

I'm thinking I could do three stacks wide and about 10 stacks in length which would be 2100 bales. with an extra 3 bales on top of the stack that gives me an extra 900 bales and I would have 3,000 bales inside the barn. Granted it would be packed to the gills and I probably will need a few feet of clearance on the side. I'd also need to get a hay elevator and I'm not sure if I have all the time in the world to stack hay at the top - I have a full time job.

I got quoted about 17k for the barn plus I'd probably need a hay elevator and I'm wondering if I'm better off just covering my hay with tarps over the winter instead. My dad never covers it and after having a few feet of snow on it after the winter, a lot of it gets moldy and some of the stacks just fall apart if he doesn't feed it in time.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are going to stack small squares outside and you live in a snowy area, you might want to put down a layer of straw bales and stack on top of that plus use some good hay tarps. Good hay tarps can be spendy but they are cheaper than a barn.

Funny you say that, I was just looking up how to not lose my bottom bales to molding. I've seen a few answers like stacking over 6 inches of gravel, putting it over a tarp, or use a layer of straw. I'm not sure if the stackliner would let me stack over a layer of bales but I could break some bales in the stack yard and see if that would work. I've been buying old billboard canvases that are 5x thicker than tarps and can get a 14x48" tarp for $45. Those seem to do the trick for the hay.

Looks like I found the answer from a dealer website. I'd need a minimum of 13'1" for a 7 high stacker and 15' for 8 high. Looks like I'll want to look into a 14ft barn then.
