puttin\' her on the trailer....

I finally bought a trailer to move my B7800 with... it's a TX Bragg 16P.... I'll be loading her up on Saturday to bring her in for service and am looking for input on securing the machine to the trailer.... axle straps? chains?... what's the best method?

buy a trailer and all your neighbors are suddenly your friends... isn't that funny?

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

A chain and binder on each corner and one for loader and one for backhoe or rear attachment if you have one. But there are many ways that the members here do it. Try a quick search. There have been numerous posts about this subject.

If your only taking her in for service then I would suggest removing the loader and any 3pt implement.
I use chain binders and a strap, one chain across the grill guard and the other through the draw bar that has a tow shackle and I use the strap across the floorboard just for good measure.

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

on my bx22 I use one chain tossed across the front where the brush guard bolts to the frame.
Then I use 2 in the rear strapping it to the foot pegs on the backhoe. 1 long chain, 2 shorter chains and 3 binders.

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

When hauling your tractor: ALWAYS have the tractor in 4 wheel drive and low range. The 4 wheel drive makes all four tires lock when setting the parking break.

When hauling my B7500 I use two chains and one binder.

I put a clevis on the drawbar and run a chain thru the clevis and secure it to each side of the trailer. The trailer I have has hooks welded on each side. I then drive the tractor forward a few inches to get the chain tight.

I the run a chain around my FEL's bucket and secure to each side of the trailer frame, again hooks are welded on the frame. I pull the chain as tight as I can get it and then use a chain binder to maker good and tight.

Yep, your post could re-ignite the "securing your load" thread war! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use two chains and one over-center binder. Originally bought a rachet binder, but found it slowed me down as the over center was faster to secure.

I have a clevis on my grill guard and one in my drawbar. I run the rear chain about a 45* angle back from the drawbar to each side. (I also "put a twist in the chain" around the clevis. If you don't do this, the tractor could slide sideways in a crash.)

I then roll the tractor forward to tension the rear chain.

Add the front chain from each front corner of the trailer, twist it once around the clevis, and snug it well with the binder and loop excess chain around the binder to secure it shut.

My theory is IF the secured binder comes loose, the rear chain still has its grip when I stop.

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

Sometimes there is a difference between what is quick and easy and what is safe. I want to live to see my Grand kids.
This has been beaten to death on this site but most people would agree that DOT regulations would lead you to use 4 separate chains and binders, one on each corner of the tractor plus a 5th one to secure the loader. If chain is used it must be transport chain.
The safety advantage of 4 separate chains are: 1) Twice the holding strength 2) If one chain comes off you still have opposing chains helping to keep the load centered.
For example if the tractor is facing front and you just have one chain looped through the grill guard: if the chain comes unhooked the tractor can roll, bounce, or slide backwards on the trailer. That lifts up on the tongue of the trailer and the backend of the tow vehicle in some cases making it uncontrollable at highway speeds.
Life is much to precious to take unnecessary chances with.

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

I trailered my B3030 to my 135 acres yesterday for the first time. I wanted to be safe so I ran one 2" strap from one side of the trailer through the bottom of grill frame. I ran it around the frame twice so the tractor wouldn't slide from side to side. I ran another one through the same and anchored it up farther on the trailer. On the back I had a clevis through my drawbar. I ran two straps the same way as the front, making sure I wrapped it sround twice so the tractor wouldn't go from side to side. It worked great. I drive 55 miles one way.

Re: puttin\' her on the trailer....

D-day was Saturday... this is what transpired...

a big orange clevis on the drawbar - I used 3/8" chain from each ring on the trailer doubled back through the clevis.... so there were 4 chains through the clevis when secured....

another 3/8" chain from the front rings through the tube on the loader.... doubled over and cinched with a binder....

I had a 2" 10k strap...but decided not to use it.... once the back was secured, I inched forward until it was tight.. then tightened up the front.... I had about a 30 mile east TX run to the dealer.... I stopped after the first 1/4 mi to make sure the chains were still tight... and they were... then again at about 5 miles... at that point... the tractor hadn't budged an inch.... so I proceeded to the dealer....

when I arrived.... I did a walk-around... no problems found....when the service manager came out... his first comment was..'nice trailer..'... then let's get'er off....

I asked how they usually secure the tractors and they do the same in the rear... with chains through a clevis... but in the front, they run the chains over the back of the bucket on the FEL... he said that the machine won't go anywhere rigged like that....

anyways... it's safe and sound at the dealer for maintenance... I'll post some pics and share the invoice for the service next week....
