Tractor
Craftsman DSG 6500
My wife and I finally decided to "pull the trigger" and purchase a Garden Tractor. We'd previously looked at Kubota BX2350 and 2400's and Massey Ferguson SCUT's, but decided they were probably too much tractor and too pricy for our 1 1/4 acre yard area. We're presently spending a ton of money on professional landscaping, so we decided a Garden Tractor would have to fit the bill.

Sears had a 20%-off sale on their Craftsman tractor and related implements sale this last Saturday, so we bought the upgraded 6500 series gasoline-powered 26-HP Kohler Pro V Twin "Courage" engine (as opposed to the B&S Intek V Twin, on the 4500 and 5500 lines), with the 48" deck (with mulching kit), a 25-gallon sprayer unit, lawn aerator, spreader, a large dump cart and an extended warranty. All of these units have good-sized turf tires and are heavy duty for this tractor classification. :D

Craftsman Lawn and Garden Tractors are manufactured to Sears specifications by the American Yard Products division of Electrolux Home Products (America), Inc. - which also makes Husqvarna, Poulan and Weedeater products for the lawn and garden sector. Our new Garden tractor will be delivered this next Thursday and our implements (which were ordered in) will be available for pick-up on Friday or Saturday. We designed our landscape with 5' walkways and 6' gates, so the 48" mowing deck ought to fit just fine. :D When we have it all together, we'll post-up a few pictures, for those that might be interested.

With the 20%-off sale, this purchase was roughly $1,000 under an equivalent Cub Cadet 1500/2500 series, or John Deere GT at their normal "fair traded" prices. The equivalent Cub Cadets use the same Kohler engines, whereas the Deere's are using "premium" B&S at this level. Most of the ratings I found on this unit were very favorable with 4.8 out of a possible 5. :D

Congrats on the new purchase!

You'll have plenty of machine for you're yard and will find that it handles the attachments with ease. I've had my Craftsman LT1000 hydro for 6-7 years now with the 25 gal sprayer, 48" lawn sweeper, dethatcher, and dump cart. I've filled the cart with ~900# of brick pavers, and loads of wood scrap for hauling out of the yard and the little 18HP Kohler Pro handles it easily. Those 26 ponies won't breath hard unless you put a lot weight on that aerator (core?). Under normal use, it will last you for years...

Professional landscaping = mulch. Have you looked into Johnny Bucket loaders? I have no idea how they work...

Thanks for the website! The Johnny Power Bucket and Blade combination is really a cool addition. Together, this combo would make it more like having a "real tractor."

Thanks,

Except you need a tiller on the Back to complement the Johnny bucket.

I thought I might be interested in The craftSman 6500 till I was informed that you can't get a tiller for it.

I have a four year old GT5000 and it has performed admirably given the abuse I have put it through. I think the Craftsman product is a good value.

You can always use this tiller:

Agri-Fab Universal Tow-Behind Tiller — 36in. Width, Model# 45-0308 | Tillers | Northern Tool + Equipment

I had a similar one for my GT5000 and it worked OK on flat land. Not as nice as my real tiller and my real tractor but it worked.

I need a tiller that I can back into a pile of dirt.
The wheels on this one would prevent my doing that.

OK, here's the Bercomac rotary tiller (Canadian company mfr) for your Craftsman or Husqvarna tractor. takes the power off your vertical shaft motor PTO. There's even a video showing a Husqvarna in action:

Congrats and good luck with your new tractor... Sounds like you got yourself a nice setup.

The front end load attachment is really cool. I might be interested that...
Thanks for the links...

But it won't lift very high.

Congrats on the tractor, but one thing is for sure, whatever you do with or to this tractor, LBrown59 ain't gonna like it.
