My wife and I finally decided to "pull the trigger" and purchase a Garden Tractor. We'd previously looked at Kubota BX2350 and 2400's and Massey Ferguson SCUT's, but decided they were probably too much tractor and too pricy for our 1 1/4 acre yard area. We're presently spending a ton of money on professional landscaping, so we decided a Garden Tractor would have to fit the bill.
Sears had a 20%-off sale on their Craftsman tractor and related implements sale this last Saturday, so we bought the upgraded 6500 series gasoline-powered 26-HP Kohler Pro V Twin "Courage" engine (as opposed to the B&S Intek V Twin, on the 4500 and 5500 lines), with the 48" deck (with mulching kit), a 25-gallon sprayer unit, lawn aerator, spreader, a large dump cart and an extended warranty. All of these units have good-sized turf tires and are heavy duty for this tractor classification.
Craftsman Lawn and Garden Tractors are manufactured to Sears specifications by the American Yard Products division of Electrolux Home Products (America), Inc. - which also makes Husqvarna, Poulan and Weedeater products for the lawn and garden sector. Our new Garden tractor will be delivered this next Thursday and our implements (which were ordered in) will be available for pick-up on Friday or Saturday. We designed our landscape with 5' walkways and 6' gates, so the 48" mowing deck ought to fit just fine.
When we have it all together, we'll post-up a few pictures, for those that might be interested.
With the 20%-off sale, this purchase was roughly $1,000 under an equivalent Cub Cadet 1500/2500 series, or John Deere GT at their normal "fair traded" prices. The equivalent Cub Cadets use the same Kohler engines, whereas the Deere's are using "premium" B&S at this level. Most of the ratings I found on this unit were very favorable with 4.8 out of a possible 5.
