Purchased a \'99 4100 instead of grey Yanmar-???\'s

Instead of paying about $7500 to get a grey market yanmar 2500 with loader and brush cutter, I bought a 300 hr, 1999 Deere 4100 HST with a quick attach Deere loader, a 60" Deere belley mower, a counterweight box, and a rear mounted boom sprayer. It is a one owner tractor that has been in the heated garage all it's life. I bought it for 12k.

Annnnnnyway, a couple of questions. It has turf tires, which I really like, but I will also be using the tractor in the sticks where it is realitively hilly/slick/wet/etc. Has anybody used tire chains on this tractor and how do they preform? I have others speak of "loading" the tires for weight. Doesn't this just make bigger grooves while mowing the lawn, or is it reccommended?

I cannot think of anything else right now, but if anybody has any input on this tractor, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

Sounds like a pretty nice deal. It should serve you well.

You have a ballast box, so I would use that when you're using the loader and not fill the tires if you plan to mow "Lawn". It's easier to drop the ballast box (think IMatch or equivalent) than tho drop off the weight in the tires.

Hey Tango,

Welcome to TBN. I firmly believe you did the right thing in takin that Deere. My neighbor has one and it is a pretty good little machine and you should have no trouble with it.

Now that your a member of the tractor club fill out the rest of your profile so we know where abouts your from.

oh yes, if you get a chance, pictures are required of your new rig.

Re: Purchased a \'99 4100 instead of grey Yanmar-???\'s

You totally made the right move!! you picked one of the most reliable machines offered in the compact market. I have a 4100 myself and there are plenty of newer 4110 owners here as well....(pretty much indentical machines-4110 is the newest version model)
I have R4's that are loaded with CaCl (in tubes). It will come down to a personal decision if you want to load them or not.
For me I'm happy because it was cheap weight. I dont use the machine for finish mowing, and even if you loaded the turfs you would not have a problem with marking your lawn..
However when using the FEL you must have to correct amount of ballast, and that can be a combo of 3pt weight and wheel weight or loaded tires. 1,100 lbs seems to be a good mark to hit with total numbers....give or take a hundred lbs
good luck and have fun,

Sounds like you got a decent deal.....I have a 2001 JD 4100 HST and I only use the ballast box filled with concrete for ballast. So far, that has worked great. However, "ducati996" is correct on the amount you are supposed to use. I didn't want to bother with wheel weights and/or loaded tires, so I use just the ballast box. I have ripped up asphault and move snow and dirt with no problems at all.

Re: Purchased a \'99 4100 instead of grey Yanmar-???\'s

I run 200lb of wheel weight and about 900;b on the 3-point, and that is definitely plenty of weight.

My 4100 had trufs, and I needed mre traction to use the loader in any kind of damp or wet dirt.

The turfs that were on the front of the machiner were wore out, so I put a set of Titan Tru power ag-style tires on, but they were wider so they fit the same rims as the turfs.

I put chains on the back over the turfs.

Was much cheaper than a new set of wheels and tires. $100 for the front tires, and another $150 or so for the chains.

The combination worked great, even in really wet clay.

I take the 3-point weight off for mowing, and now that the bulk of the loader work is done on my house, I will take the wheel weights off (next spring after snow season).
