Pumpkins, Corn, Tomatoes... General Garden Update

I never thought we would see any actually grow this year with all the cold weather we had right up to the third week of July. Even now our nights drop down into the low 60's most nights.

Even though it has rained north, south and east of us we have little rain this summer. Pumpkins are at least 2 weeks behind and corn is at least 3 weeks behind normal. We have a few green tomatoes but no ripes ones yet. Cucumbers are only an inch or so long. Our strawberry patch produced only small tasteless berries. Green beans have been eaten by the rabbits. We have not had a single garden feast this summer.

At last my pumpkin patch is now full of pumpkins. Most are still a deep green but there are a few orange ones, a few little colorful ones. The raccoons have yet to visit my corn patch so I can know my corn is not ripe but it is will be soon. How's everyone else's northern gardens doing this summer?

I think I am only a little ahead of you here in Chicago. Today we started the beginings of our 1st tomatoes. There are very few green tomatoes on my 4' to 5' plants and still have many yellow flower on the plants. Corn is doing ok (if I could keep the racoons away) I planted 10 days apart end of May and 1st week of June, Ears are smaller than last year but it sure taste good. Peppers are just starting. Pumkins are like yours. I think there is still hope.

Up to this point your corn looks good, hopefully you can keep the coons out until you harvest.
We are at the tail end of our sweet corn growing, it was a very good year. It was way to wet in the early part of the season, I lost an entire patch to water but replanted in another section and it's producing like crazy. Bugs were almost nonexistent and the ears are large and healthy in all the patches.

Our garden hasn't done all that well since most of summer rain,last 5 days of warm weather peppers and cukes doing very well..tomatoes,there's always next year.

Have faith luremaker. We're about an hour northeast of Toronto and our garden is JUST now starting to produce.

-The strawberries were a bust
-we're picking ripe tomatoes now (just a few but soon we'll be buried),
-the green and yellow beans are in full production,
-hot peppers are ripe and green ones are a few weeks away,
-cukes are 3 inches,
-taters are good,
-squash and pumpkins at least 2 weeks if not more behind
-peas are in full production (as if that makes any sense)
-june blackberries are just producing now
-runner beans are just starting to set flowers and a few beans
-onions were a bust

Steve, I have pumpkins about 8" tall that are a complete experiment (pipe-dream?). W should be right at 100 days worth of growing by Thanksgiving. We often don't have a freeze until then, so we may have some pumpkins by then. Your's look pretty darn good. How many days total has it been since planting?

I don't know what it is with tomatoes this year unless it has been our excessive heat. My cherry tomatoes did well and early girls have been producing like gangbusters. The better boys are a bust and I'll not grow them again. I've had far better luck with celebrity in the past even though they are determinant type. Grape tomatoes try to produce, but they quit also when the temps get too high. That doesn't keep them from growing 10 or 12 ft vines though.

My cukes and squash have died off after a great harvest, and I still have a couple of zucchini producing. Their heavy stem/runner is about 6' long. Peppers and okra are going great. I have eight banana pepper and eight bell pepper plants. Also, I have one yellow chili and one red chili that are producing very well.

It amazing how behind the crops are everywhere. The farm across the road just harvested their winter wheat this afternoon, it's usually is off the fields by late July.

This year I planted Howden (115 day), Jack-O-Lantern (75 day) on June 11 and Jack be Little (95), 'Hooligan' Hybrid Pumpkin (95 day), 'Spooktacular' Hybrid Pumpkin (85 day), small sugar (110 day), Acorn Squash (87 days), Butternut Squash (85 days), and lots of crown of thorns gourds on June 15 according to my calendar. I believe that pumpkins are a little like corn and require heat units rather than actual growing days. I usually start harvesting my pumpkins right after the first frost. Our first frost can be as early as the first week of September to as late as mid October.

I planted my corn (peaches and cream early - 70 day) on May 25th.

Wet spring really messed things up for me.

Strawberries - rotted in the rain, usually pick over 100# from my little patch.
Corn - great
tomatoes - slow to grow, but finally getting some
green beans - barely grew, planted 2nd planting, might get a few.
canalopes - getting some good ones
cucumbers - overflowing
peppers - plants didn't grow very well, but getting some small ones

I need to get some good compost tilled into the garden for next year.

Here in NW Ga has been a pretty dry summer with showers on a rare basis.

Spider mites totally booming on green beans and tomatos..........perethian, malathion, and carbyl have little control on them..............

Cucumbers for weeks were 10 to 20 pounds per day but now down to a few.

Tomatos have us eating tomato/mayonaise sandwiches 3 times a day and still giving out

Peppers are tall, strong plants and keeping us in bells, jalapeno, and anahiem

Squash has played out, turned under; but cant find new seed around here

Corn is putting on good; but seems the root systems are non existant and have to be staked or straightened up.........WISH SOME KNEW WHAT CAUSES THIS

Green beans grew vines like going out of style; but few beans..........despite the mites

Replantings of lettuce have kept us in salad fixins since late March........

NOW.........what to replant where the squash was.......cant find yellow squash seed around here and time is getting on and on............Mid november is frost around here........
