Hi, I have a dumping trailer which I presently run off of my rear remotes on my CK20S. I am thinking of adding a 12v pump and hydraulic reservoir to the trailer so that it could operate independently. That way I could tow it with my Quad or even behind my truck when using the backhoe. How do I determine the pump and reservoir requirements to do the job?

Here are some DC power pac's.

Surplus Center

Look through them and decide if the reservoir on the Power pac's will work.

Some of the power pac's are for SA cyl and others for DA cyl.

You could perhaps use your own reservoir.

For sizing the reservoir on a one cylinder setup, calculate the volume of oil to fully extend the cylinder(s). Specify the next size reservoir larger than that, at a minimum. Sometimes, if the system is running a lot, they purposefully oversize the reservoir to help keep the fluid cool. Everything in inches: inside cylinder diameter squared times 3.14 times cylinder stroke divided by 4 gives you cubic inches of oil to fully extend the cylinder. Then, if you want to convert that to gallons, multiply your cubic inches answer by .00432.

For sizing the pump, on a one cylinder setup, take your cylinder volume from above (cubic inches OR gallons) and divide that by the cubic inches per minute OR gallons per minute rating on the pump at maximum rated pressure. That answer gives you the minutes to fully extend the cylinder under worst case conditions. If it's not worst case, the pump will run faster so that time will improve.

You may be already spoiled by your high flow tractor system compared to a little DC system.

Slightly oversizing the reservoir also helps account for thermal expansion, some air entrainment, and prevents the pump from sucking air when the cylinder is fully extended.

Also understand that the given GPM ratings are under ideal circumstances (i.e. very light load). In actual use they will be slower than this because the motor will bog down under load. How much it bogs will depend on the actual voltage level at the motor while under load and the pressure required. Voltage level is influenced by the power source and cable resistance (gauge, # of strands, length). Make sure there is a fuse or circuit breaker in the circuit somewhere.

The pump ratings I saw were YYY volume/time @ XXX psi. In other words, YYY flow rate when the load is heavy enough to make the pump work at the XXX psi. Lower the load and the pump runs faster because it "unbogs", if that's a word.

On a related note, my dump trailer starts out straining since the load resistance is heaviest when the bed is horizontal and also the cylinder is pushing at an unfavorable angle. As the bed angle gets higher, the pump speeds up because of the "unbogging." The OP needs to also make sure the new pump has the same pressure output as his tractor or it might not get the lift started.
