I've decided it's time to upgrade to a PTO chipper with a hydraulic feeder. My Patu DC 40 has been great but I'm now facing a total of 250 acres that needs tending (not all at once fortunately) and I believe the extra expense will justify itself in productivity for this weekend warrior. Right now the top choice is a Valby CH160. I've looked at the Salsco's and they are nice but just too big heavy for my B2910. Anyone have other suggestions?

My trusty Patu is on the market and I expect it will sell quickly. These seem to be in short supply used.

Have you looked adding hydraulic feed to your patu, i think it was availible with it?

Yes, I have. It's about $2800 to add it. I like the idea of a slightly larger unit so it can more easily take branches that are crooked, forked, and otherwise odd shaped.

Are you aware that the Salsco 824 has a 4x8 inch infeed capacity (the 826 has a 6x12). It will take many crooked branches other chippers will not. It also has a more powerful feed system then the Valby. The 824 weighs about 750-800 lbs. In addition it will eat small Xmas trees which most 4/6 inch pto chippers have a hard time with if they can do it at all. How many hp is that 2910 and what will it lift.

PS: don't get me wrong Valby makes a good product. But the Salsco unit will out chip the comparable Valby, Patu and Bearcat.

The 2910 is 30HP and can lift 1300lbs 24" behind the lift pins. Do you think an 826 would work on it or should I use an 824?

I've viewed the 824 as comparable to other 4" chippers like the Patu DC40 I have now, except of course it has a feeded. Are you suggesting the 824 is comparable to the Valby CH160, and has a more powerful feeder? Tell me more? How are you comparing them. I've always viewed the 826 as comparable to the Valby CH160.

From what you were saying I thought the "crooked, forked and otherwise odd shaped' branches were of more importance then larger diameter branches. If so you would be extremely happy with the 824. It has an 8 inch wide opening and your tractor would do an excellent job runing it. I am not saying the 824 is comparable to the CH160 that is a 6 inch chipper the 826 is more than comparable to the CH160 and yes the 826 may be to large/heavy for your tractor. I am saying I believe the 826 and 824 have more powerful/better feed system than the Valby. Where are you located? You should see for yourself. Next week the 18 and 19 is Keats (in Keene) open house the Salsco chippers will be their and you can see them run. Then you can report back to everyone with what you think.
