Tractor
John Deere 3720
Back when the snow was 3 feet deep around my house I was pushing a blade backwards with my 3720 and struck something under the snow and broke the top of the tranny housing off where the top link pins into, thus disabling my 3 point set up. I liquid steeled the pieces back together as I could see into the top of the tranny and didn't have an extra 5k laying around to fix the tractor. Anyways, I never checked to see if the pto would engage at that time. Fast forward 2 months and I have the mowing deck all hooked up and ready for the first mow and when I pull the pto button out nothing happens. There is a physical connection at the pto shafts with the gears but no power from the motor. What I dont know is what happens when you pull out the pto button. There has to be a electrical over hydraulic/gear set up somewhere on the machine, I just don't know where. I checked the fuses and they are all good, so I'm kinda at a loss here as to what the problem is. Any ideas?

I recommend that you purchase the 3x20 series technical manual. It contains a world of information on the tractor. The PDF cost is under $100, and well worth it.

Update. From the info that Cocre sent me (thanks) and what I found on JD's parts site I was able to diagnose that the small piece of tubing inside the tranny case was broke and not allowing the PTO to engage. Well $40.00 later for a 4" piece of tubing and two o-rings I had the PTO up and running. I had to re-break the case to get to it and re-glue it back together. I'll probably tear the unit down during the winter to fix the upper tranny case the right way. Dave

Good job!!!!
Now, you should buy the service manual on CD-ROM for future work and maintenance.

BTW, you're the second TBNer who has posted about that upper link mount breaking on the 3x20 series tractor (unless you're the gent who posted about it a month or so ago).

Wow, good work! That is pretty impressive on the temporary fix.
