I was wondering if any one has any experience with pto roller pumps. This is what i want to do, there is a small stream that i would like to pull water out of to water my landscaping. We have not had any rain in northeast pa for last 25 days and thing are a bit dry. I dont want to stess my well so i was looking for a pto driven water pump that i can suck water out of the stream and into a holding tank. I need the pump to be self priming and need about a 10 or 15 foot suction lift. would like something in the 15-40 gallon a minute range.

Rusty, I have a series 6500 Hypro roller pump that I used for insecticides. Most places, like Northern Tool, list one or two, but Hypro makes at least 7 series of 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 roller models from 7 gpm to 74 gpm and max pressures of 150 to 300 psi. They're available in cast-iron, "Ni-Resist", or "SilverCast" body & rotor. Now I don't know exactly what those last two materials are because I have the cast-iron. They're great pumps for moving liquid, but I'd caution you about 2 things: (1) you need a filter on the intake before the pump because they are made for liquids, no trash or debris, and (2) the cast-iron rusts very quickly if not properly maintained (I just last week rebuilt mine because I neglected it.)/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I wouldn't call rebuilding it a major job if you know what you're doing, have a good press, sandblaster, wire wheels on your bench grinder, sandpaper, and time./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

It sounds like you might need what is called a transfer pump. They pump at more gpm than most typical pto roller pumps and are designed to run a low pressures. Most transfer pumps are driven by small gas engines. Don't know if they make ones for PTO's but I wouldn't be surprised. I don't think most roller pumps are self-priming but I'm not sure. The high flow PTO roller pumps usually run at 1000 pto and not the usual 540 pto speed. (1000 pto usually only on larger AG tractors)

You definitely don't want a roller pump. You need a self priming centrifugal style pump. I would suggest you consider a used one for intermittent use or getting a small belt drive pump from Northern and use a small gasoline engine. The small amount of water you are pumping will only require 4-5 hp depending on the discharge pressure you intend to run. I would not waste hours of light load on a good tractor and drive train for this small amount of water. You would have to make up PTO belt drive speed increaser to get good pump performance. Hypro makes an excellent belt drive centrifugal pump for ag spraying, but it is not self priming. I have used one for years. I understand they may have a new model that is self priming.

If you are thinking Northern, talk to their technical people before buying. Their catalogs can be very misleading regarding application.
