Hey folks,

I'm looking for a PTO mounted water pump for general irrigation drawing water from a pond. Northern has this one:

PTO-Driven Rotary Pressure Pump
Self-priming pump pulls water from any source. Ideal for disinfecting, fire fighting, transferring diesel fuel and more. Fits directly to the PTO shaft of all tractors. Moves 1440 GPH at 540 RPM. Maximum pressure 425 PSI. 24 GPM maximum flow. Features a non-corrosive steel impeller, full face rotor and a patented seal. One year limited warranty.

Produces up to 14400 GPH for jet spraying ease!

In Stock
Ship Wt. 33.00 lbs.
Item# 385
Discount Price... $139.99

Has anyone purchased this pump ??? How well does it work ??? I'm assuming its a centrifugal impeller type ??
Does anyone know the manufacturer, I would like to get detailed pump curve information showing operation at various points.

Thanks for the help !!

Dear tc, I recently bought a rotary pump for a sprayer to go directly on the PTO shaft. Spent nearly that much for way lower specs. Sounds like lots of pump for the bucks. Won't Northern provide the specs?

I tried to get more specific details but they could provide any !

25 GPM is more than adequate, but I suspect that rating is at free flow ( no discharge hose pressure restriction ). My concern is how fast the flow drops as I add a 100 -200 feet of discharge hose. 1/2 GPM with 100' of hose won't do a lot of good !!

tc35dforme,
Sorry, don't have any experience with the particular pump that you're asking about, but thought I'd maybe point out a couple of things.

First, I think that 14400 GPH number may be a misprint. In the text, it lists GPH at 1440 and then at 24 GPM, which multiplies out to 1440 GPH. I think they double-tapped the 0 on that 14400 number.

Second, it appears that this pump may be more aimed at "pressure" uses than at "volume" uses. 425 psi seems like a lot of pressure for an irrigation purpose. Would be great to fight a fire with, though.

Third, if you're intended purpose is for irrigation, would you be better off with something like this? This pump is rated at 8400 GPH and doesn't require you to tie your tractor up. Consider how much water you want to pump at any given time. If you watering a large garden, then it's not a problem. But if your talking about transferring say 10,000 gallons of water, with the PTO pump you'd have your tractor running at pto rated rpms for almost 7 hours at 1440 gpm. The small gas powered pump could do it in about 1.2 hours.

Just food for thought.

CVHoss,

Thanks for the reply...I picked up on that 'typo' also...1440 GPH or 24 GPM is about right, 14400 would be quite a feat in such a small pump body. The impeller would need to spin at light speed !!!!!

I am just looking for a intermittent set-up to hose down a few apple trees, maybe the raspberry patch, or keep the "punkins" growing.

I'm not sure what I'll do yet...I'm hoping someone has one and can toss in a few pennies worth.

northern used to sell three of these pumps, a small pressure pump, the medium pressure pump (the one mentioned here), and a larger pump with a 2" in and out. i have the medium and the large, have used both intermitently over the past 4 years, they work as advertised, i use a 50 gal water tank and the medium pump to water new trees and shrubs during the summer. it will put out as noted, the pressure from this pump is tremendous, i blew apart one of the hose end sprayers with it. the larger pump will move much more water but wont generate the pressure that the medium one does. i havent had any problems with them, although i dont use them that often. they attach by sliding the pump on the pto shaft, there is an allen screw on the pump coupling that tightens on the pto shaft. there are two chains that you hook onto the 3pt or draw bar to keep the pump from spinning. the chains have hooks on the ends, one of the hooks is the allen wrench you use to tighten the screw in the coupling. it comes with an inlet and outlet hose and the hose couplings needed. i dont run mine at 540 rpms, way too fast, i just let the tractor idle and engage the pro, it will deliver plenty of water weithout draining the tank too fast. the pumps are made in italy.
anything else you want to know ?

I'm thinking that 14400 gph, or 240 gpm could be the actual maximum flow. 240 gpm is really not that much water, especially at low pressure. With a centrifugal pump, as flow goes up, the maximum available pressure goes down. If this pump could flow 240 gpm, it would probably be at about 20 psi or so. At the pump's maximum pressure of 425 psi, the available flow would probably be only 5 or 10 gpm. There is probably some whizbang math formula to figure this out, but I'm not an engineer, at least not the sort with the college degree.

tc35dforme, Yeah, I know just what you mean. ...pumps 1000gal per second. However working against a suction head of 2 inches or discharge head of 4 inches output is degraded to less that 1 gal per week.

It can be long and narrow or wide and short but not both. What is the PV (pressure-volume) curve at various RPM. Good luck. Seems like a lot of pump for the $ maybe it is too good to be true.

I have a simular pump that I bought from Tractor Supply. It will pump as advertised, but you have to watch the pressure that comes out. I blew a hole in the side of a single hose with a sprinkler. I have found that 3 hoses, and lees PTO speed cuts the pressure down to a workable level

I can imagine if you were flowing water from a hose and suddenly shut it off the pressure would go through the roof. I wonder if you could get some kind of regulator or relief valve.
