John Deere 4310 E Hydro
I have a 2003 deere 4310 Problem is that part in the owners manual where it tells you to always engage the mid PTO before the rear .Well it took 6 years but i obviously wasn't paying attention and did it backwards there was this loud screach then the PTO just quit ....Question IS how bad did I hurt it and how much will it cost to fix???

Ouch!

The mid-PTO is driven from gears on the rear PTO shaft, That is why you must engage the front first so the gears aren't spinning. I suspect at least one gear is stripped of it's teeth...and they are in the sump now. I would not the tractors till it's fixed because the loose teeth could cause a lot more damage. There is no way of knowing until at least the rear cover plate is pulled.

Well, it depends. You will not have to split the case, I know that for a fact. If you are handy, pop the back cover off, and see what you did. The only problem with that is that you will have to drain all the fluids. You can check out my previous post with my 4310 PTO problem if you wild like, also, there is another member on here that rebuilt his entire 4300 from the ground up with excellent pictures Feel free to ask me any questions. I have some for you.

1. Is yours an HST?
2. Does the rear PTO work, and just not the Mid?

I also have the shop manual, so I will help you out if I can.

seems like their should be a failsafe on this. it's asking alot for consumers to ALWAYS remember to engage in ONLY one SPECIFIC order. and if you DO forget and do it backwards, just ONCE, CATASTROPHIC FAILURE!!!!

That is one JD design I have never been able to understand why it was done. They really dropped the ball (or gear) on that one.

That sucks.

On my 4720 with EPTO it mentions something like that also but specifically about the front/rear selector lever. It's kind of odd on the EPTO, the selector is for Rear, and Front and Rear, no front only. If you want front Only the EPTO 'shift' at the rear has a neutral to disconnect the rear. Strange.

That is the other odd thing about the 4000 TEN PTO. Since the Mid-PTO cannot be activated without also activating the Rear-PTO, guess you have to remove anything from the Rear-PTO you do not want to be running at the same time.

my 4300 is the same. rear or both. not that i would do it, but i had the brilliant idea of a front AND rear mount snowblower....i suppose as long as you aren't loading both implements at the same time, it would work?

I suspect there is room for one clutch (barely) and not for two....and the cost for one is a factor as well.

But doesn't bode well for the occasional user who doesn't understand the clutch is needed to shift the mid PTO into action. :(

How soon we forget what it was like when a clutch was needed to put the tractor into gear, or we'd grind the gears if we didn't use the clutch :D Same deal with the mid PTO.
