Tractor
Farm Boss 224
I bought a 4x4 Farm Boss 224 by Jinma with a loader, finish mower, tiller, blade and bush hog a few months ago and it has been a great tractor so far. Today I was out bush hogging when I got into a large clump of multa flora rose that was more woddy then I thought. I hit the cluth and lifted the bush hog. As I started to go forward I realized the pto wasn't turning. I checked the normal stuff, made sure the pto was engaged etc etc to no avail. At that point I gave up and started to head back to the barn. I unfortunately stalled it out at that point and couldn't get it to restart. I am thinking that something got screwed up inside and for some reason it has gotreb stuck on the "on" position. I dont know if it is the case with these tractors but I know on the newer domestic tractors it won't start with the pto engaged. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

New tractor or did you buy it used? When you try to re-start, what noise, if any, does it do? Have you looked to see if any wires were knocked loose?

I bought used the hour meter doesn't work so I have no idea how many hours are on it, its a 2004.. I get no noise at all when I turn the key. The only wire I see was that way when I changed the oil yesterday morning and it ran fine for several hours yesterday afternoon and then again for several hours before this happened today.

Sounds like you probably pulled the CLUTCH SAFETY wire loose on the left side (little button that a bolt barely contacts near very bottom left foot tread on bell housing.) OR the SOL wire on the starter may also have been ripped out. Brush does that some times...

As for the PTO most likely you pushed some brush into the side lever and moved it into Neutral between the 540/1000 RPM speeds. There are TWO (2) PTO engaging levers one on floor on right side (engage disengage) and the dual speed lever on right farthest back.

I went out and looked at it with the neighbor a bit ago and we jumped the starter to at least get it to the shed. I didn't have the energy to mess with it tonight. I will take a look at that when I have time later this week. Didn't really think about checking those when it happened. One of those moments where you say "Oh **** what did I do and how much is it going to cost me to fix". And of course your mind always jump to the worst possible solution. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ok so I looked under the tractor this weekend since I finally found time and the weather cooperated (the problem with having a tractor to tall to fit in the garage door) and I don't see any wires loose. I'm wondering if I did indeed mess up something with the pto as when I was running it last week it was running a little funny. Do these tractors have a pto safety switch that would disallow the tractor form starting if the pto is engaged? If this is the case is there anyone who knows where these wires run so that I can jump them and see if that by chance fixes my issue so I know at least what I have to get myself into when I pull it into the neighbors shop later this winter after the real threat of snow has passed.

As far as I know there are no PTO safety switches (is this a JINMA or FOTON do you know.?)

Does your tractor shut off when you turn the key off>? Meaning it has electrical fuel cutoff on it. If that is the case the electrical SOL may not be turning on the fuel pump to let it run. (Did it RUN when you jumped the starter or were you just running it on the starter motor>?)

As far as I know Farm Boss was manufactured by Jinma but I could be wrong on that.

It has a pull type shut off so no electrical shut off

It actually runs when you jump the starter, at least I assume so. I've done some light bush hogging as well as running the loader when I've jumped the starter and can't imagine that the starter motor runs everything.

So it runs, but will not crank by the key that is the issue?

Then it could be the KEY, the wire to the SOL on the starter that engages the starter electrical high current side or the clutch safety switch, or the main fuse on the fuse box.

First place I would look is the clutch safety switch. Also the fuse. Often when the clutch switch fails it shorts out and blows the fuse.
