Hi all
for those that gave me advice on tractor selection thx.
To let you know I have settled on the 5500 FWD with the 4n1 loader. I'm expected to take delivery next week, until then I have a question please. The PTO is rated at both 500 and 1000 at 2100rpm. My question is when slashing (bush hogging?) what PTO speed do I aim for? Do I use the 1000PTO and a lower engine rpm or do I use the 500 and higher rpm. I suppose I'm asking what is the optimal speed to turn your slasher at and how do I best achieve it.
Thx

I've just done a search and found some good previous post that have helped and I will admit confused me somewhat. As you may have gathered I very new to this tractor stuff so pls bear with me, am I correct in saying that you set the rpm and adjust your speed by the gears to maintain sufficient torque etc
thx again

It is very rare to find any implements that are made to operate at 1000 rpm. If you were slashing and the going was very easy, not requiring much HP, then you could run your engine at 1050 RPM and the PTO shifter on the 1000 RPM setting and get 540 RPM to your slasher. This would save fuel, but becareful not to over rev it as the slasher is only made to safely operate at 540 RPMs. I hope this makes sense.
