Does anybody know if PTO speeds are linear w/engine RPM? The 4110 indicates 540 PTO RPM at 2500 engine RPM and 1000 @ 2700.

I rarely have my engine running over 2000 - does anybody *really* run one of these at 2500+?!

I'm trying to figure out how much I would be overrunning a 540 brushhog with the PTO in 1000 mode with an engine speed of 1800 - 2000.

Is this a really bad idea?

If you are going to do that, run it at 1400 to 1450 RPMs.

Thanks for the response. The only reasons I'm considering this is 1) I figure I'm only spinning the blades at 388-432 in 540 mode resulting in less than ideal cutting, and 2) I remember my Jubilee would run faster down hill - 1800-1900 vs. 1500 which would be overspinning the cutter to 648+.

If the PTO speed is linear, then at 1500 engine RPM, I should be turning the PTO @555 in 1000 mode and 667 @ 1800. I'm comfortable with this range.

Don't run a 540 gear box over 540rpm this is the maximum it can handle.
When running things like a brush cutter, higher engine rpm is the way to go, plus high tip speed will give a cleaner cut. So I would be running it in 540 normal with prob 2300 - 2500 engine rpm, you will do the engine a favor as it wont be lugging and you'll do your brush cutter a favor by not over running it.
If you had a spray pump on, the the story would be different, but any kind of ground / material engaging implement needs the engine working in a decent torque range.

I hear ya'. By 2200 the 4110 sounds like the guts are gonna' fly out. Tip speed is exactly what I'm trying to get. Without running the guts out of the engine.

Not lugging the engine is a given.

I would love to hear from 4110 owners and what engine speeds they normally run.

my tractor sounds good at the following rpms
2300-2400 rpms brush cutting in gear 6-7
north of 2500 rpm in gear 4 in some wet spots with heavy grass
2000-2200 for most bucket/loader work and moving 900lb round bales

Yes they are linear. Do what Galen said. If you use 1000 keep it around 1500 or less. Otherwise you are overspeed significantly. Try to aim for 600ptorpm or less.

Thanks for the info Buck. I guess I've spent too many years with Johny-poppers. :)

I run my 4110 almost the same as Buck - with rotary or finish mower I like it right around 2100 - 2200 rpms and run 6th gear in heavier grass or rougher terrain and 7th gear for easier cutting areas. Any higher gear is too fast of ground speed for good cutting or for my old body to bounce around the field !! On very rare occasions in extremely heavy grass I may bump the rpms up to 2500 and cut back to 5th gear but not often. For loader work I like my rpms right around 1500 to maybe 1800 and I grab a load in 5th gear and then shift to 7th or 8th for transport. For me, higher rpms with loader work is nice for the hydraulics but tougher to shift accurately consistently - I'll grind a gear quicker with higher rpms when trying to get some materials moved. I'm on a job for a neighbor nearby right now and did about 6 hours of loader/boxblade work today, some really rough stuff. Tomorrow is about 6 hours of some heavy rotary work on his right-of-way, hasn't been cut in a couple of years. When I cut it last 2 years ago I went thru about 10 shear bolts on the huge stumps scattered about the place and that was running with my bucket down low for a "feeler". My tractor will click over 2000 hours on the clock sometime during the day tomorrow ...
