I am trying to retract a pto shield between a John Deere 3032E and a Frontier manure spreader. The labels are worn off so I can't identify the manufacturer of the shield. I have googled shields. Everything so far shows shields with 3 lock tabs with different methods of removing the shield. The shield I am working with has 4 slots on it. I can see inside the slots can see a plastic ring with what looks like a metal ring against it. I can rotate the plastic ring and can see 2 slots in the ring but no matter how I position the ring, it will not retract. Help!

Take the front half off the tractor and get it up on the workbench with enough light so you can study it.

They are all basically the same, and a little bit different, but most will have locking tabs to rotate into a slot to disassemble.

Yeah....and then the plastic tabs break off....sometimes....anyway. ☹️

Huh? The op said that he couldn’t remove it from the tractor. I think I had the type of driveshaft he is describing on an old tiller. A real PITA. You have to rotate the plastic collar counter-clockwise and pull the driveshaft off the pto. The problem is the plastic collar that holds the steel ring he is referring to keeps slipping. I just had to keep trying and squirting WD-40 into the the driveshaft until it separated. After enough years of cussing that thing, I bought a better driveshaft.

Now I'm a little fuzzy on what he means. He clearly stated he is trying to remove the SHIELD. Then he almost describes removing a rotating shaft coupler. I believe he is having issues with the shield. I have had those issues on most of my stuff. That's why I use a Metabo and a cutting wheel to remove those things. I can't grease any of my U joints with those things on.

I cut about 2" off the front and rear plastic bells on the new chipper shaft so I could get at the releases. My primary tractor already has a flip-up guard. None of my other implement shafts even have shields.

Update for the pto shield. What I was trying to do, was to lube the u joints on the pto shaft without removing the shaft. This spreader is used to clean 60 horse stalls twice a day, so it does not allow for much down time also it is 10 degrees out so fingers get a little cold. Today, I was able to get the shaft removed from the tractor, With another can of penetrating oil I will get it off the spreader. I can get the jts lubed and make the shaft is free to move. When warmer weather comes, I can try to get the shields off and do the job right.
As a side note, I found a diagram of the exact shield showing the lock ring but not how it releases. All it shows is a split plastic ring with a snap ring around it. I now have an idea how it works.
Thanks for the replies Ray

I don't have much use for those plastic things either. I never wanted to mention it for fear of the safety police. 😐

I don't care about the safety police. I was expecting comments from them. I suspect hey have the same issues.
