PTO Shaft Question

Hello All

i've just picked up a used provonost puma 54" rear snow blower for my CK20 HST, but it didn't come with the PTO Shaft.

Question: is there a standard length or category PTO shaft that should be used with a snow blower ? are they rated by the PTO horsepower ?

Usually the shaft comes with these things. Mine did. But anyhow...

The PTO shafts are fairy standard. You just need to get one with the 1 3/8 six-spline end on it. (even though you have a category 1 3point hitch, I believe they call the shaft a category 3 but don't quote me on that) Any Tractor Supply store has them. The length is adjustable. (as long as it's long enough) They can be cut with a hacksaw, and slid back together.

Most impotantly, check the length. Raise and lower the snowblower without the shaft attached, and find the point at which the shaft will be the shortest, and make sure you cut the shaft a little bit shorter than that so it doesn't bind as you raise the blower, and damage the rear of the tractor.

Well done driver444! You are very correct and well done with the length. This is one thing that gets forgotten and as you mention does lots of damage to the tractor and implement alike.
Jim, taking into account the size of the tractor, it should not be much of a problem, but you might want to get one that can handle a little more power than your CK20. The reason I say that is if you ever upgrade to a larger tractor, the shaft will be big enough to handle the power. I have no experience with snow blowers and do not know how much power they require, so it may or may not be a factor for you. But please bare it in mind when using other implements.

i'll start shopping for the shaft right away..... only a little over two months before that white stuff starts flying up here in new england....
