PTO pump replacement

I just picked up a used Long Mfg., Model 1200, backhoe attachment that was originally powered through a PTO driven hydraulic pump rated at 8 gpm @ 2000 rpm. Based on pictures shown in the manual, this pump was attached to the 540 rpm PTO shaft using a gearbox that increased the rpms to drive the pump. Naturally the original gear box and pump are long gone, so I need to find a replacement.

I'm looking at the Prince PTO pumps but I'm a little confused on which pump I should get. Do I get the 7 gpm pump or the 11 gpm pump? Would it damage anything on the BH if I get one of the higher gpm pumps so I could maybe use it with other attachments in the future?

I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to hydraulics so any suggestions would be helpful.

What kind and model of tractor are you planning to use? It may already have all the hydraulic flow you need and a simple Power Beyond kit will take care of it for you.

The BH is going to be hooked up to my 1961 Ford 841 Powermaster. However, the hyd. pump on this tractor only put out 4 gpm, which is half the flow needed for the BH. That's why I'm looking at the Prince PTO pumps.

Increasing the flow will increase the operating speed of the BH. It will also require more HP to drive it. As an option you can possibly run your tractor at less than PTO speed and get the 8 GPM from an 11 GPM pump. This would also keep the engine noise down along with a little fuel consumption.

NOTE: Read through the Prince specs to see if they show a min and max operating speed before running it to slow.

I would suggest this one. It will use 18 HP to power this pump.

Your PTO speed is usually not at max tractor speed. Once installed, you could do a test for volume and note the tractor rpm to produce the 8 GPM flow.
