Hi all, have not been here in a while.....

While cutting brush yesterday the tractor became very noisy while the PTO was engaged. It has always made some noise, but handled my 42" cutter fine. It started banging very loudly and then stopped working. When I unloaded it this morning I tried it and it worked but it was noisy.

The tractor runs excellent otherwise. I like the tractor, but have also thought of moving up to a larger size.

Can anyone venture a guess what is wrong and how difficult a fix will be? I there any one close to me who works on these tractors? Do you think I can trade it in as is?

Thank you for all of your help. -Keith

It's very hard to diagnose from here, you need more troubleshooting. Exactly what started banging and what stopped working? Is it noisy in all pto gears, or with the mower unhooked?

I have noticed the last couple of time I used the PTO there was a banging, It sounded like every time the PTO shaft turned it was hitting something. I thought it was the plastic cover on the shaft. Then I noticed when I turned off the PTO the noise stopped even as the shaft continued to turn on thr cutter as it slowed down.

Yesterday while cutting it all off the sudden got a lot worse. It sounded like something was loose in the transmission/ gearbox. I stopped the PTO and tried it again and the shaft would not turn at all in all of the PTO gears.

When I unloaded it this morning I tried it again, this time it worked (nothing was connected) but it was still very noisy. It would turn but was doing so in a "jerky" fashion. Almost like some of the teeth were missing on whatever gear is drives the shaft.

There are 5-6 bolt around where the shaft comes out of the tractor, I thought about taking these out to see if I can get the shaft out to see what is going on. Am I asking for trouble if I do this? I could also purchase a repair manual.

That appears to be the only way to go at this point. It does sound like broken teeth on a drive gear. You would be better off with a Yanmar YM1300 parts manual. It will be in Japanese, but with Arabic part #'s, and good parts blowups, so you can ID your broken part w/part #.

Well you were right. I pulled out the PTO shaft, which was fine. The problem is a gear that the PTO shaft fits inside. The teeth on the inside of the gear is fine, two of the outer teeth are missing. I will try to attach a picture.

I have not figured out how to attach a picture. The file is too large?

Just an update. I had to take off the top of the rear differential which also houses the rear hydraulics to get to the broken gear. There was 10 bolts holding it on. Once inside I noticed another broken gear. This one is on the shaft that goes from the transmission (where the PTO lever is) to the rear PTO. The gear on this shaht meshes with the one on the PTO shaft.

I am not sure how to get this internal PTO shaft out? I am guessing I am going to have to "split" the tractor. I have e mailed Arron at Hoyes. Hoyes has been very helpful in this project.

I did seal the left front wheel differential while it is out of service, it actually worked and is no longer leaking!

I will keep you all posted. -Keith

This gear in on a shaft that goes to the transmission. It turned the gear in the previous picture. The hole you see is where the PTO shaft enters.
