Hello all,
I posted this in Attachments but it was suggested to me to post it here also:
I purchased a front end brush cutter that's rated for 9-16 GPM. My Mahindra puts out 9 GPM so I knew it would not be powerful as it could be. Used it today for the first time and it did a decent job, just had to go slow.
So I searched for PTO pumps and found a lot of them for sale, but I'm unsure how it hooks up.
Do I get it own reservoir? Whats the best way to mount the reservoir, make a 3 point platform?
Will I need a valve or just turn the PTO off and on when needed? If so, a relief valve should be installed?
Any other info like someones build or detailed instructions would be appreciated
Thanks!
James

P.S. I assume installing a larger pulley on the existing pump wont increase flow?

Using oil as a working medium always causes heat. As a kid, we had a pto pump and reservoir mounted off the 9n or 801 to run our splitter. At first, the small capacity would get real hot so we doubled it. Some bought splitters have small reservoirs and get hot too.

Jamepc,
What pressure is the cutter motor rated for? In hydraulics flow (GPM) is speed and pressure is force or motor torque.

To run a PTO pump you will have to have a separate reservoir assembly. A relief valve to protect the pump & a return line filter should also be on the reservoir. Depending on how you operate the cutter a directional valve for controling the operation of the cutter or you could use the PTO on and off to control the cutter head.. In the lines to the cutter head motor you should also have a a relief valve for sudden pressure spikes from hitting solid objects and a "run down" check valve to allow the cutter head to run down when the pump is shut off. If a directional valve is used a motor spool may work. You may also need an oil cooler on this system.

No you normally cannot increase the flow output of your existing pump on the tractor.

Thanks for the reply oldnslo!
When the third function button is released the cutter head stops in about 2-3 seconds. Does that sound like there may not be a run down check valve installed?
Do you think this list is close to being correct:

PTO pump
20 gal reservoir
Pressure Relief Valve (Is Prince Hydraulics RD1800 relief valve a good option?)
Oil Cooler (like the auxiliary transmission or motor oil coolers?)
Platform for reservoir (perhaps a 3 point King Kutter Carry All?)
Hoses (know a good source for custom lengths with couplers?)

Thanks again,
James

Landpride, now owner by Kubota has a hydraulic unit. Very pricey but a good place for ideas.

25 gpm needs 52 pto HP

HRS3 Series Hydraulic Reservoir Systems | Land Pride

Doubtful your tractor would have the HP to drive the hydraulic pump.

You need a separate reservoir, cooler and filtration system. Anything running for long periods in warmer weather will generate a lot of excess heat that must be dealt with.

Likely far better to install a separate Chinese gas engine on the brush cutter. Will be much cheaper and versatile.

Most cheap wood splitter pumps have a built in relief valve. Do pto pumps have one? You’ll either need a big fluid tank or a good oil cooler.
