Mahindra 6000
This is in need of a little back story! We haven't used the PTO on this machine ( '02 Mahindra 6000) for about a year and a half. It was time to do some shredding so we hooked up the shredder. Went to engage the PTO and it was hard to get to engage. Made kind of a grinding sound. It eventually engaged and ran fine. Since then for a few weeks now it has still been hard to engage, but once you run it for awhile it engages better if you have to turn it off. However my dad was running it yesterday and he shut it off to move from one section to another. When he went to re-engage it and it went clunk inside. Now the handle just moves back and forth without doing anything.

How does this PTO work?

What are the multitudes of things that could have gone wrong in there?

Does anyone have a diagram of what it looks like in this machine or anything similar?

What does it take to fix something like this. I am a fair mechanic, but have never been in the rear end of a tractor before. I think I can fix it I just need to know what is involved.

Where do I get a service manual?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am going to double post this. It will also be in the Parts/Repairs section.

Are you 100 percent sure it isn't just a slip clutch adjustment on the shredder, or a broken shear pin? It doesn't seem likely the PTO could be bad.

No, I am sure that it is inside the tractor. The engage handle will not engage anything.

Not sure if you have the 6000 2wd or 4wd but on mine there is a roll pin in the pto enage lever. I broke this once. Could it be that?

Possible, does the handle come off easy if the pin is broke? Is that an internal or external part?

And it is 2wd.

I went out to see if the handle was just rotating on the shaft and it isn't. I tried to pull the shaft out and it slides part way out if you pull on it. Is this normal?

No that isn't normal. I believe you are going to have to pull the hydraulic tank off of the gear housing to get to where your problem is. The grinding doesn't seem right, are you using the clutch when you try to enguage the pto?

I talked to the Service manager at the place we got this tractor from. He said it is a very common problem. He said when the PTO clutch goes out it starts to get hard to engage. People try to time it right and force it in. This ends up causing a bracket to brake inside where the PTO lever engages the sleeve. He said that fixing the bracket alone would not fix the root of the problem. So I figure a clutch replacement is in this tractors future.

I may have the clutch you need! I bought a clutch froma dealer that was supposed to fit the 6000 4x4 but my dealer said it was 2wd clutch.

Thanks I sure do appreciate the offer, but I think I will just stick with the dealer doing all of it. Again thanks!
