I am very happy with my new DK35 HST, but I wonder why it includes the PTO automatic "feature" that shuts down the PTO if you raise the implement and re-engages as you lower the implement.

Other threads suggest throttling down when engaging AND disengaging the PTO. I'm not sure about the disengaging (some say it is hard on the PTO brake--(do we have a PTO brake?)) but certainly agree with the engaging part and always throttle down before engaging a mower.

I guess it would be great if you mowed at idle speed. :)

What do others think of the automatic PTO feature?

It can be seen as a safety feature... but I have used it when bush hogging and running my auger and snow blower. Saves wear and tear on switch too!

I don't use the automatic PTO feature at all. Always turned off. I start at 1000rpm to engage (a tad higher with my rotary mower as otherwise I sometimes stall the tractor). I generally have already throttled down before disengaging PTO but I wouldn't be concerned about doing it at higher RPM.

I havnt figured out a use for it either.....dont want to use it with the post hole digger, cause i raise and lower it to clean the hole. dont want it starting and stopping......havnt mowed with the new tractor yet....maybe i could use it there.... but i wish that switch had an auto pto spin up or spin down feature...then i would say "COOL"

Like a couple of others, I always throttle down before starting my brush hog or 6' finishing mower. Engaging at full speed seems abrupt and just doesn't feel like it's treating the drive components well.

I read somewhere on TBN that some PTO's have a brake and disengaging at high speed increases wear on it. Disengaging at high speed doesn't feel like it is as harmful as engaging the PTO at high speed. But I throttle down while disengaging the PTO just in case the concerns about increased PTO brake (if it exists) wear are valid.

Do these machines have a PTO braking device?

I dont know for sure.....not even sure who to ask. I just reciently purchased an pto overrunning clutch ($70.00) to get the 6" extension i needed for my wood chipper...this device allows the impliment to run at full speed, but when i shut off the PTO the impliment runs down on its own, but the PTO comes to a complete stop.......never used one before..and i kinda like it.

U joints have a relatively limited range for safe operation, too much angle and they will fail. If it's the one at the implement and the shaft is beating around at 540 rpm it will get nasty fast.

I agree, but Kioti has the darn safety switch set so low that mowing on anything but flat causes it to disengage & re_engage a lot so I never ever use the thing.

For mowing, no, but for snow blowing, I can see an advantage.

Thinking about it, the auto feature would work great with my logging winch. I kick out the pto when I lift the winch up as the angle is quite steep. Then, at the landing, I restart it so I can unhook the hitch. This would work awesome!

I can see use for it with a tiller. Such a short shaft have to be very careful if leaving it run to lift and turn around. I wonder if there is an height adjustment for it? It has to be operating off a sensor or potentiometer at the rocker shaft somewhere. Good question to ask dealer service guy.
