Tractor
john deere 5203
good morning fellas.i have a jd 5203 and the pto alarm is driving me crazy.when i push the individual brakes to turn real sharp i kinda get raised in the seat just enough so that the tractor thinks that i am getting off or standing up.is there any way to pull a fuse or disengage this feature cause it is really annoying.i think that i can remember that my pto is engaged by looking at the huge yellow spinning shaft behind the tractor.
thanks,

Ever seen an old timer that was run over by a tractor with a brush hog running. No. Those are called closed casket funerals.

Maybe this isn't so bad, but what about putting up with it for a bit? It might be that you 'learn' what it takes to get the brakes pushed without setting off the alarm. If you disable the alarm, you may be getting yourself into a potentially dangerous situation.

I have had a number of things that were awkward or nearly impossible on my machine that before I even knew it, had gotten the hang of.

Similar problem: Seat interlock shuts off the tractor. Even the act of slightly getting up to change what shoulder I'm looking over can start to shut down the engine.

As an EMT I realize why the safety cuttouts and alarms, but a 2 second delay wouldn't delay the shutdown enough to make a difference. On my old 4300 I put in a push to over-ride switch that as long as held down you didn't need to be in the seat.

On the other hand... With the 4520 Reverser I have now, it is very easy to bump the tractor direction lever, and with out the shutdown I would have been chasing the tractor several times.

rockyridge, have you ever tried to haul down a 4,000 pound tractor with a 1,200 pound hog on the back of it with the pto's running at cutting speed?if not then it is not easy i am 230 pounds and i need to almost stand on it to turn effectively and right now.besides the alarm doesn't stop you from getting off it just is loud and annoying.and,i don't possibly think that i will have a brain fart and forget what i am out there doing.i always idle the engine down before i step off anyway.like i said this alarm doesn't stop you from getting off it just makes it annoying to step on the brakes hard enough to raise the seat up so the tractor thinks that you are getting off.
thanks for the replies anyway,if ya don't know the answer then please don't interject something else.i know full well what a bushhog will do,that is why i need one.
thanks again for the concern,

Oops! sorry, I meant to stick a bitty disclaimer that you probably knew all about this stuff, but for some folks who might read this to consider before unplugging any safety device to consider.

I know full well that sometims this stuff has got to be adjusted...

Sorry I don't have the details, but somebody on another thread, with some kind of tractor, mentioned that some of the operator presence things have a level of adjustment possible in their mountings ... you know to compensate for a 100# operator and a 300# one ...

rockyridge, sorry to sound a bit on edge. but this thing is really getting on my last nerve.it does it almost every time that i step on the brake.its this buzzing sound that goes off when i let off of the brake and sit down with all of my weight.
thanks again rockyridge and homebrew,

This is good! -> "...i think that i can remember that my pto is engaged by looking at the huge yellow spinning shaft behind the tractor."

You had me cracking up! (thanks)...

It wasn't too long ago that tractors didn't have these alarms.. In fact, tractors have been without these longer than with them.. I realize a lot of folks have been hurt along the way though... but honestly, would this alarm saved many of them from getting hurt? (that is a honest question, I don't know enough to have even a good guess)

.. heck.. we have got to be careful and be thinking while on these machines... we can't rely on the alarms, etc.. . Makes me think of the mother that is suing "MySpace" dotcom because the site didn't "protect" her daughter.... uh.. wait, whose job is it to protect her?

oh well,.. thanks again for the laugh... I would be looking for the "disconnect" on that alarm soon.. . .. but that is just me..

Does the buzzer provide any useful function? On my little 2520 the engine cuts off when the seat safety switch is disengaged and the tractor is in gear (it does get annoying when I'm looking behind the tractor, but I'm getting used to it). If the buzzer isn't used for anything else, I'd just track down the location and disable it rather than mess with the seat switch. Perhaps you could replace it with something more useful, so every time you hit the brakes it triggers a compressor tied to a balloon in case you need an airbag :)

battalionchief,my thoughts exactly.does your 5105 not have the same alarm when you stand up or try to get out of the seat for any reason?these 2 tractors are not that much different.jdbower, the airbag sounds good to me.
thanks guys,
