My beloved and hard working PT422 started giving me fits this week as I tried to use it in sub-zero weather. Over the fall I had experienced some surging and an intermittent stall after running up a hill or under a hard load for a while. This week it wouldn't stay running off idle or would start after sitting and then die in about 10-30 seconds. New fuel lines, plugs, and fuel filter, no change. Tore the carb down, cleaned and reassembled, no change. In a moment of weakness I was about to order a new engine but then I decided to pull the top off the carb. When I did this I could see that the float bowl would slowly fill up but not refill fast enough and the engine would starve out and die. Only one thing left- the fuel pump. I connected the carb fuel line directly to the new filter at the tank, and then filled the tank half full, with the level way above the top of the carb float bowl. It fired up and ran strong. Ten minutes later I had the snow cleared off my driveway, and brand new pump on order from Ebay.

As I think about it, though, do I really need to install the new fuel pump? If the tank level is above the carburetor level and the float valve is doing its job keeping fuel at the right level, and the engine is running great, is the fuel pump really necessary? I am guessing that the Robin engine is a general purpose motor and the manufacturer has no idea what kind of installations it will be used for so they add a fuel pump. On the PT the tank is in a good location for gravity feed.

If you're going to experiment with removing the fuel pump, be sure to install a fuel shut-off valve between the tank and the carb. One tiny grain if dirt to keep the float valve open and you'll have a garage full of gas the next morning. ;)

As for removing the fuel pump, I've had several lawn and garden tractors with no fuel pump. Lawnmowers, etc... so I doubt its necessary. But use the shut-off valve religiously.

Thanks for the replies! I think I will run it without the pump for a while and see how it does. I just ordered a pack of 2 metal ball valve fuel line shutoffs; doesn't hurt to throw one on the lawn mower.

Please keep us updated on how this works. Any problems I have had with my Robin has been pump related due to extreme heat. At a cost of about $50 for a new pump every 400+ hours or so I would love to eliminate it. Would be interesteed in the link or place you got those shuts offs.

Just remember that you installed a shutoff on your lawnmower in spring, or you'll be pulling that cord until your face is blue. Don't ask how I know that....

Funny you say 400 hours for a pump failure as my hour meter just kicked over 401 hours (mine's a 2003 PT422 that I bought used in 2009 right at 300 hours). Here's a link to the shutoffs I ordered:

I like the look of those shut offs...thanx! All they have locally here are the cheap plastic ones. I would say 75% of the 400 hours was in fairly hot weather. Heat in the engine compartment is excessive!

I didn't want to hijack the thread, but mentioning PT's heat problems causes me to bring it up again, maybe for newer owners that haven't seen it?

It's old 'news', but I eliminated my heat problems when I installed an electric radiator fan on the engine cover.

I haven't had any vaporlock problems since, either. No more 'run on' when turning the key off after any extended operations. It was an easy and inexpensive solution to multiple problems.

That's cool. Does it come on at a certain temperature or is it on whenever the engine is running
