Has anyone converted a four stroke gas engine to run on propane? Would like to get one of the kits which allow you to use gasoline or LP. Seems like a reasonable project for my portable generator. us carb

We have a 350 Chevy engine running on propane. Works good.
Also if you are familiar with Schwans food service(home delivery), there trucks all run on propane here.

I've known a lot of folks who had the dual fuel (gasoline/LPG) on cars and trucks. I don't know anything about doing the conversion myself, but when I bought our fifth wheel trailer, I had the dealer install a 4.5 kw Kohler generator that came to the dealer as a gasoline generator, along with the conversion kit to run only on LPG. It was actually a pretty quick and simple job for them to install.

The City of Charlotte did that with a few vehicles a few years back. Their findings were:
Gas mileage was no better.
Cost more $$$ (special equipment, time involved to refuel, etc.).
Finding suitable fueling sites was a hit-n-miss.
I don't think we have but a couple of them left now.

Propane conversions make for very clean running engines. This is done for fork lifts that have to operate inside/outside open warehousess. Propane is less efficient than gasoline. Propane provides about 10% less HP and 10% less mileage than gasoline. The good side is that there is less carbon and less that blows by the rings. The oil stay cleaner longer and the plugs do not foul as fast. Propane weighs 4.25 lbs per gallon compared to gasoline at 6 lbs. per gallon.

Having said that, Propane has some disadvantages. It is heavier than air and will settle in low places if it leaks. The tanks are heavier and also require a 20% expansion space. Thus a 5 gallon propane tank is actually 6.25 gallons. The tanks can be refilled at limited places. Plus, Propane costs at least as much as gasoline if not more. In California, it is illegal to dispense propane after dark.

Other than having a cleaner burning engine, always a good thing, it will cost to convert the gasoline engine. It is harder to refill if you run out, and will not provide the power or "mileage" of gas. You would probably want at least a second 5 gallon tank, 40+ lbs. Plus, those tanks are supposed to be recertified every ten years. Unless a long engine life is a consideration, it may not be worth it.

Propane generators are used on 5th wheel trailers because they have no other fuel and they already have propane on board, and the fumes are not quite as obnoxious.

On most motorhomes, they most often use the same fuel as the main engine, even though the motorhome carries a lot of propane. Mine has a 5 KW generator in gasoline, but I have 27 gallons of propane. Still it runs on gasoline, because a similar sized generator would only put out about 4.5 K.W.

Unless you have a compelling reason, or nothing else to do this winter, I wouldn't.

Thanks for the replies. The process seems easy enough, inserting an adapter plate between the carb and air cleaner (if I read it right) and not real expensive at 200.00. The kits I was looking at allow you to use either gasoline or LP/NG making it a tri-fuel unit. I use propane at the house so have ~ 300 gallons available. Last weekend's weather left us without utility co. power from Thurs. night to Mon. afternoon. Of course, I ran out of gasoline for the generator Friday morning and the road was closed because of downed power lines. Thankfully, the neighbor had enough extra gasoline on hand until we could get more.

I'm talking about portable tanks, whether mounted on a vehicle or something you carry in. I don't know about home delivery. I really don't know why except that the powers that be feel it's unsafe. Since it is a colorless gas, heavier than air, they may feel it's too dangerous to have it being discharged at night. Might also have something to do with the fact that the law makers probably had little exposure to propane.

You ask why. This is after all California, the home of fruits and nuts, and they are all in elected positions making ridiculous laws. The environmentalist required MTBE be added to fuel to cut down on emissions from motor vehicles. When they found out it was getting into the ground water and poisoning the water, it took them over 5 years to remove it. Some stations, I believe, still have it.

If you don't think this is a screwball place, then look at the upcoming recall election. 135 candidates on the ballot, including Larry Flynt of Hustler fame. At least I haven't seen a snow shovel in years.

Eliminating my BS here, I really don't know the reason they won't pump propane at night.

I concur.

Frank f15:

You got me thinking about the after dark issue, so I called two local propane dealers and guess what. There is NO restriction on pumping after dark, just some stations had their own policy about it.

I STAND CORRECTED. We learn something every day. Thanks for making me think and question.

It's still the land of fruits and nuts though. Another candidate for Governor, Garry Coleman the actor does not know who the Vice-President of the United States is.
