Project Farm reviews chain sharpeners

Another good test from Project Farm. I've been using the Stihl 2-in-1 sharpener for a few years now, and it really is a great combination of speed, quality, and ease, at a decent price. I knew it produces very consistent results for me compared to regular hand filing, but I was surprised to see it ranked so high.

I got to use one of the Stihl 2-in-1's the other day, seems to work well and I like that it knocks the rakers down at the same time. I have the older Harbor Freight grinder and it works well also.

I'm probably going to buy either a 2-in-1 or the Granberg (like how the granberg can give such consistent results)

I like the 2 in 1 because I sharpen mostly in the field. I actually have the Pferd Chain Sharp CS-X. It is identical, I believe they manufacture the Stihl units. I have one for each of the 2 chains I use.

I use the Stihl file for my saws. At first, I didn't realize that you needed to correct size file for different sized chains, so I was using an old file for a smaller chainsaw on my bigger saw and didn't think it was working too good. Then for whatever reason, I was in the area of the store where all the files where and I realized that they was different sizes. I got he correct size for that chain and it's been night and day better. I've been using it for years now and I always go over the chain real quick before using it. I never have a dull chain anymore!!!!

I had read the Pferd were sold at a cheaper price, but I bought my Stihl branded sharpener at a Stihl dealer for less than $30.

I've chased 4-5 chain sharpeners trying to find one that I could use easily and get good results. I've settled on the Pferd 2in1. Does anyone want to buy some slightly used chain sharpeners???

Hand filing is a great trick to learn, but eventually you have to
set all the cutters to same length. One trick is to use a small
crescent wrench as a gauge to measure all the cutters in length.
At the end, you will have to put the chain on a good sharpener
to get all of the cutters equal in length.
I use the 2/1 a lot, but after about 5 sharpening's with it,
I use my Oregon bench sharpener to put all cutters to
equal length.

tried dealing with stihl and no luck so will ask here: anyone using the stihl 2 in 1 file system. can a 7/32" file be used with it? the stihl website and even amazon has various sizes to choose but no 7/32 " also needs a 25 degree angle too? i use the oregon d70 20" chains. serious wood cutting use. thanks.
