Bobcat v417
Hello all,

I have a 2015 Bobcat v417 with 600 hours that I have had for about 5 months and use on my ranch. As it has just turned cooler I have had a problem getting it started in the mornings. Brand new battery with 1125 CCA.

When it's finished with the glow plug count down and I try to start it, I just get a thud and nothing. If I jump start it, warm it up and use it, I can restart it all day long. Next morning, same thing. Relay seems good (clicking) and power to the solenoid best I can tell.

I maintenance all my equipment, but I am no means a mechanic and trouble shooting is not my strong suit. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. I hate to have to haul this monster to the dealer.

Thanks in advance.

my first thought is that something is drawing the battery down overnight. Maybe try disconnecting the battery at the end of the day. Take a voltage measurement on the battery after disconnecting and again in the morning before reconnecting to see if the voltage is still the same then reconnect and try to start to see if it does the same thing.

Thanks for the reply gimmodog.

We have multiple pieces of equipment on the ranch that we are not always sure when they will be used. For this reason they are always on maintenance chargers when not in use. Each morning the v417 is at 12.87 volts from the charger and then at 12.6- 12.7 when disconnected prior to start.

Test for parasitic draw on battery.

Could be a bad cable or connection.

Was there some corrosion on the positive cable clamp when you removed the old battery?

The negative cable is short and easy to check for voltage drop while someone else turns the key.

Check the positive cable at the starter solenoid with meter ground on the engine block where the starter bolts to it, while someone else turns the key.

Thanks Xfaxman,

Really good information in this. I'll report back what I find. Thanks again.
