I bought a project wood splitter for my BX2230 tonight. I didn't want to run off of the tractor hydraulics so I waited until I found one with a PTO pump. it has a Prince pump that mounts direct on the shaft. As near as I can tell it weighs around 40 lbs. Assuming it fits (likely have to remove the guard), is there any risk to hanging this much weight on the PTO shaft?

All PTO pumps are made to hang off of the shaft from what I have seen.
Also PTO's have hefty bearings to accommodate the wobble created by unbalanced shafts.
I do believe however that a tether of some kind is required to keep the pump body from wanting to spin in the direction of rotation.
I would say that you are quite safe in just letting it hang out there.

Yeah, it'll be OK, like Piloon said, they will want to turn with the PTO, so to save wear and tear on hoses, bolt a long enough length of chain to it so you can secure it to one of your 3PT arms
