I am trying to make a decision on purchasing one. I was wondering what you guys have paid for your machines. I live in Massachusetts and am wondering if it would be feasable to maybe travel up to New Hampshire to avoid the dreaded sales tax. Also which dealers in Mass have the best reputation. I have been told Morse in Wareham is a very good dealer to deal with. Thanks for the info!

I would be a bit cautious about purchasing in another state to "avoid" state sales tax. In this day and age, and especially in this tax hungry state, such transactions can easily be identified and the lovely Commonwealth of Massachusetts will then demand their "cut" even if it was purchased out of state.

If you can get away with it, more power to you, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it.

I price shopped for my B2910 both locally and in other states. I was able to negotiate my local dealer down a bit using quotes from other dealers. I didn't blame him or expect him to make up for the sales tax. I just paid it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I believe if you do a search there is a member here that purchased an out-of-state tractor to avoid the sales tax and was shortly thereafter presented a tax bill by his state (I don't think it was Mass.) based on the purchase.

If you're going to "pay cash"....real cash...then maybe you can escape any scrutiny. But if you're financing or write a large check, I believe it's likely you may be caught.

Just my $0.02.

Good Luck,

Brian,
I live in SE NH. I have found that prices in NE are typically high. I went back to PA and looked at tractors in tax free DE and considered a purchase and trailer rental. But I backed out at the last minute.

Regarding MA vs NH and sales tax: There is an entire economy in NH based on Mass residents crossing over to avoid sales tax. Take any major route into NH and you will see it. Exit 1 of of 93 - giant mall. Rt 28 from Metheun into Salem NH - Mega store after megastore. Rt 3 in Nashua - giant mall and megastores.

Maybe Mass will persue you if they catch wind of it cause it is such a large purchase. On the other hand Rte 28 is lined with new and used car dealers. Theoretically if you bought a car in NH you would still pay the excise tax when you register in MA. So there should be no real benefit to buying a car in NH. Yet all the car dealers on 28 stand as testament to something.

Brian,

I am about to go sign papers later today. The deal I got for the BX22 itself with either tire option is $14,500. Area does seem to matter on pricing; I am in Western NC.

I was quoted a BX22 price of $14,500 just last week.

Also, unlike cars there is no registration. My state charges the sales tax at registration time so it doesn't matter where you buy the car, they get their tax. Tractors do not have registration so sales tax is actually collected by a "Use Tax" which the buyer is responsible to declare, the honesty system rules. If there is financing however, then there will be a UCC filed in your state and that will certainly be a possible open door for the state to catch a tax free deal.
The UCC should only be if you finance through a dealer/mfg, not the case if you use a home equity loan where they don't care what you buy, they have the home as security so there isn't any record filed with the county and state.

This is only my .02, all states have their own regulations and could be different.

I'm not in your area, but $14,500 here also.

You guys on the east coast seem to have a price advantage. The best price I can find in the northwest on a BX22 is more then $1000 more then your price. Arn't I closer to Japan then you? Wonder why the higher prices? I am also looking at 9% state sales tax which adds another $1,400 dollars. That is $3000 more then the "great" price that the Will has on his tractor comparison page.

We have the Sales Tax out here also, 6%. I really think it is not fair to hold a dealer responsible to adjust a quote for a sales tax difference. In reality, any delivery cost replaces some of the sales tax savings, I agree it is not a total offset but it can get up there. I was given quotes with $1.25 per mile.

Here's another thought too, if an interstate sale is made to avoid the sales tax and the sate does catch it later they will get you for the tax and you would have already paid a delivery charge. That would really sting.

BTW, sure glad we don't have your CA gas prices out east!!!!!

Thanks for the input guys. I am definitely going to shop around. I got a quote of $15900 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif which I think is a little steep. I think $14500 to $15000 is a little more realistic. I also want to get both the bar and the turf tires, which I see goes for around $400 to $500. Are there any accessories I should be thinking of adding /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif (block heater, larger alternater)? This website seems very helpful and full of knowledge. Thanks again for the info! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
