The fridge in our cabin is developing mold in the fan box at the back of the freezer [just had repair guy out today to replace the fan]. He says the solution is to keep the fridge running but we can't do that. If nobody is there, the power is off.

So I am asking -- does anyone have a clever solution to this. Like, will a box of baking soda do the trick, should we try moisture absorbing products I've seen on TV, or would charcoal work? Your suggestions are appreciated.

If the fridge is off leave it open, put a folded towel over the door so that it cannot close tightly.

Ditto on leaving the doors open. The towel or some other means of propping them open must be used. An open box of baking soda in the fridge and freezer compartments won’t hurt either.

Good luck.

Thanks. Actually, we leave the door slightly open and over the years have had little mold trouble. But this is in the little box in the freezer that holds the fan, which I don't think could be popped open.

if leaving the door open doesnt work maybe replace the fridge. Or keep fridge only power on while gone.

Is it damp in the cabin? Other than leaving it open I would try DampRid, but it would depend on how long the there is not anyone there and how damp the place is.

Mix up baking soda in water to saturated solution & spray inside box wid fan running. Den blow dry soda into fan while running..

Soda leaves behind chemical salt dat murders mold and stop new mold.

Always block the door wide open with a chair... no issues yet.

We always blocked our frig door open with a chunk of firewood. Baking soda in a small open jar or set the whole box in the frig. Baking soda will eliminate odors. There is no sense trying to get rid of the mold - it's everywhere. You must get rid of the conditions that favor mold establishment and growth - damp.

Normally - leaving the door open on the frig will do the trick, solve the mold problem. If the cabin is damp - you have a situation that will require a bigger solution than the frig door.

If the fridge is off leave it open, put a folded towel over the door so that it cannot close tightly.

Yup....I do that at the end of every season.
Never any mold.
