Saw this video online and thought it was a pretty neat idea for splitting wood without constantly having to pickup the pieces and reset them.

Wood Chopping SkillsVideo

Forgive me if this has been posted before, I searched to no avail. Video is safe but website might be "Not Safe For Work"...

Dang, that wood must have been dry to split so readily and easily!

Yup, great idea, might not work so easily on all types of wood, but it's a good idea.

Looks slick for sure. But I've never seen wood split that easily.

Where's the knots? Every stick of wood I get to burn looks like a crotch or a major junction with a large branch... Wish I could afford to burn such nice looking wood.

Stick is probably frozen. Wood is much easier to split and will split straight through after it's frozen. Here is another trick when splitting wood and the axe sticks in the piece you're chopping and won't easily come out. Most people lift the axe/stick up and hit them down on the chopping block again. The problem is you're only using the weight of the axe to drive into the stick. When you lift the axe/stick up, turn them over so the stick of wood is up and the axe is on the bottom. Then when you hit the stick/axe on your chopping block the flat face of the axe will hit the chopping block and the weight of the stick will force itself down on the axe. Try and hit the face of the axe as flat as you can on the chopping block.

Technique seems kind of flawed to me. When would I rest my arms? :)

Looks great. It would work well for the pines and firs I often cut, but mine are usually about 1/2 to 1/3 the diameter he is working with.

I notice he is using a Fiskars splitting axe. They are amazing, and once you use them you'll never go back to a maul. I got the regular 28" SPLITTING (not chopping axe) a couple of years ago. This year I got the heavier Fiskars X25 axe and it is even better than the lighter original.

I learned the turning the block and axe trick a couple of years ago when I first got the Fiskars axe. A friend who has years of bush/timber experience (had Timberspan, a company that builds wood bridges for logging companies) was building my driveway and I showed him the axe. As he tried it he used the trick DonnieP mentioned and I've used it since. As DonnieP says, it uses the inertia of the wood to more effectively split it.

Everyone where I live heats with wood and yet they did not seem to know that trick DonnieP mentioned.

If wood around here split that easy I wouldnt own a splitter,,, but around here the splitter works harder than that.
