Just changed my hydraulic oil and filter. Do I prefill the new filter?? if so 1/2 full or 3/4???

I thought I heard at one time prefilling them full can cause them to burst???

Thanks

Sweep,
I never heard that. I never have pre filled hyd. filters.

Only filter I prefill is the fuel filter on my Cummins and that is just sinking the filter into the fuel in the canister without spilling any.

i usually prefill any filter that is vertical, and mounts with open face up. if vertical, and open face down.. nothing.

if horizontal, then i add 1/4 full.

oil pressure is max at cold start and running and primed. how would a filter burst from prefilling? it's made to take that max pressure an more. nothing magic happens to increase the pressure in a pre filled filter. any air in there is going to compress anyway, and any air int he system will be expelled and purged thru oil ports and clearances..

If it's a return filter I can't see the sense in it, the oil is going thru the system and then thru the filter before it goes to the tank.....Mike

depends on the location and purpose for the filter. If it is being used to filter oil to the turbo charger then I would definitely prefill it.(Had one tractor this way) Problem is that a lot of the oil coming out of the container is dirtier than what has gone through the filter.

If like Mike says it is in a return line why bother.

Like soundguy said. What is going to cause it to burst?

I will prefill any filter that can be prefilled. It will get oil pressure to the working parts sooner.

I change a fair amount of these things and always at least get the filter media completely soaked in fluid and then partially drain them if necessary, it is the way I was taught and has become habit over the years.

If you fill from the outside holes and not the centrer the oil to the eng, hyd or whatever system its for will be filtered.

I believe prefilling filters is bad practice and do not do it unless specifically advised to do so by a machine's operator's manual. Such recommendations are few and far between.

Can you please explain why pre-filling a filter is a bad practice?
