This has been a banner year for crabgrass and foxtail. I don't expect my horse pastures to be free of these annuals but would love to be able to apply a grazing safe pre-emergent next spring to help control it. Does one exist or does anyone have any experience with one?

Grazon I believe is safe for grazing after a short time after application. It's 24D basically and pre-merge. You can google and find the label for it. There is probably several variants of Grazon some may not be for pastures.

Call a local Co-op or a chemical distributer for recommendations.

Grazon is really the only option I am aware of. It has no graze back restriction but be aware the manure will contain residual. So don稚 compost the manure for a period of time.

I sprayed 2,4-D back in the spring, but was late getting out there and I think I spread it too thin because I didn't get anywhere near the results that I had hoped for. I later read that it makes a huge difference in when you spray. The weeds need to be less then six inches tall and growing when you spray to get the best results. I'll try again next year. Once deer season is over, I'll focus on getting everything bush hogged down, and then buy the chemicals early so I have them on hand and I'm ready to go when the weather is ideal, and the weeds are still just emerging.

I didn't spray my pastures because I had baby goats that where nursing. I read that Grazon is fine for animals, but not if any of them are nursing. Goat weed is what I'm hating the most, but there is at least a dozen different common weeds that are taking over that I need to deal with.

My experience is stay away from the hy-yield chemicals. If you want the good stuff go to Helena or CPS. Even online,

If you don't use a surfactant or an anti-drift surfactant (is best) you're spinning your wheels, or at least some dawn. I use crop oil.
