Doing a little light reading in the library :D

and found I am supposed to change my power steering pump "filter" on my NH 1925, the predessor of the TC 33.

Talked to my dealer, and they did not believe me that it was a filter  till they looked in their manual.

Then they said they had never changed one before.

So, to the general population out there, and probably Rick B in particular, anyone ever change this thing?

It is item 3 in this drawing, and I would call it the resovoir for the PS pump.

Hmm, sorry, that link does not seem to work direct.

Well, it is the black canister thing on top of the power steering pump that holds the ps fluid, it has the cap in it as well.

Thanks

Many ford designes used a filter inside a resv can..... at least the ones that had resv on pump.. etc..

I purchased a 1925 in 07 and changed the filter because I knew it had never been changed before. $80-100 I think. Dealership said they RARELY change those. Mine had 1700 hrs and I don't plan to change again until problems arise with power steering. Use power steering fluid , NOT hydro fluid and filter should last alot longer.

I changed my PS filter after 1000 hours and only because I had to replace steering cylinder that was slightly bent. It is expensive. If you think of the amount of dust in the engine compartment; changing it is not a bad thing. Maybe just not as often as manual says.

Why would you expect the filter to last much longer with ATF?
I'm not sure why you said that, but NH's recommended fluid is hydraulic fluid. I suspect transmission fluid is much less viscous and also has different additives. Many cars use transmission fluid, but I would stick with NH's recommended fluid to ensure the pump has the proper lubricant. This is especially important during the warranty period.

The tractor has a hydraulic cylinder for power steering assist and an automobile PS system works differently.

I think I have changed two over the years. There are high hour/older tractors out there that probably should have them changed, however.

I agree with Jim.. I'll bet your manual specs M2C134D fluid for that power steering system.. not auto PS/ATF fluid..

I think I am at about 12 or 13 hundred hours.

My steering cylinder is starting to leak "more" as in a class 3 leak.

That was what sent me off on my light reading. :)

I think what I am going to do is to rebuild that steering cylinder and replace that filter / resovoir at the same time.

And yes, I run the 134 in everything. It just makes it so much easier to tell the DW on the phone what jug she needs to grab to fill something when there are only about 4 different fluids on the tractor. And it just makes it more convienient on me when all my stuff takes the same fluids and I buy it in pails and put it in the pumper thing.

AH, a difference of opinion , on this site ? can't believe it
My thought was power steering fluid is a much cleaner fluid and when I purchased the filter it had a decal on it "power steering fluid". I guess it could be interpreted to mean " Rookie , fluid goes here " . I agree the 134 fluid would work.
It certainly elimates confusion using 1 product.
However , I would be relucant to use ATF in the steering/ I have always noticed ATF as being a product designed for " less slippage ".
