power assist hydraulics question ...

I'm getting a late 1960s Ford 4400 Industrial loader. However, the power assist steering hydraulics is not working. I'm thinking from bitter experience that it might be better to bypass the old system completely & install a new after market power steering solution. Any suggestions?? Thanks, Ged
