post hole trencher

Has anyone used a post hole digger like a trencher, that is drilling a series of holes close together in a line, say a foot or so deep? I was thinking about borrowing one from a friend to try it out for a downspout drainage trench. Am I wasting my time? I don't have access to a trencher or a backhoe for free but I can get a post hole digger.

I think the dirt from the second hole would fall back into the first hole but it wouldn't be a total waste of time because you would get some seat time on a tractor. But the work is happening behind the tractor so you might get a sore neck form looking back all the time. It might be too sore to crumb the ditch with a shovel.

I tried it to bury an electrical line. Too hard to get the holes close without breaking through the other hole. And you still have to cut out the leftovers.

A subsoiler will work much better.

IMHO...If all you have is the PHD a series of holes would be better than a pine-handled backhoe to dig the entire trench. You will still have to use a shovel to knock out the dirt between the holes but it'll be less work overall. Leave a little distance between the holes to avoid the problem of dirt falling back into the previous hole as noted by bigtiller.

I haven't tried this myself but having read the prior threads, howabout using the PHD and following thru with the midbuster.That way you would get to decent depth and then clear the dirt out. Ill try that on my next project
