I'm in the the market for a post hole digger for my Max 28. What category implement works on these tractor? Would I need to buy one for a compact tractor or are they all the same?

I think an issue you will want to consider is the lift height and how high you can get the auger bit off the ground.

Category 1 hitch and implements, just watch ground clearance. However they do make them cuts and scuts, check out everything attachments. Free shipping if within 1000 miles.

If you've never used an auger:

Low rpm, shallow cuts, lift and clean the hop often.

Or

Get one of those 3-4' pipe wrenches and good gloves...

YES - slow and lots of clearing of the bit. They are like a massive screw and lock in the ground quickly if allowed to go too deep with out clearing.
Also STAY AWAY FROM THE BIT when it is running (don't have some one guide it, etc) they will tear a person up VERY quickly!

I second the Everything Attachments recommendation. Give them a call and they should be able to answer all your questions. They're very helpful and won't steer you to something bigger or more expensive than what you actually need.

The main problem may be clearance when driving from hole to hole. My Agri-supply PHD barely clears going from hole to hole on my B7610.

What diameter post hole auger ?
Once you use a hydraulically driven post hole digger. You will wonder why anybody fools around with a pto driven unit.
A post hole auger mounted to the loader bucket is best of all.
I would assume a Max28 is the following tractor ?
TractorData.com Mahindra Max 28 XL tractor information

Some of us "fool around" because our funds are not unlimited. I cannot even find prices on hydraulic units quickly on the web. My Agri-supply PHD w/ PTO shaft and auger cost < $500 in 2013. Looks like prices have gone up a little.

If your primary purpose is to put a lot of posts in the ground get a $3,000 post driver.

OP - how many holes do you need to dig? Are you putting in posts, planting trees? Just digging holes for fun :)
