POR 15 for a Herd 750 Seeder

I am refurbishing one of my dad's old Herd seeders. It is a 750. Gearbox is good but I had to replace the seed opening gauge. The seeder was in an old shed. To be honest with you I didn't know it was there. Since I had to take the gearbox out and disassemble the frame I thought it would be good to go ahead and paint it. Lots of surface rust but after some acetone and transmission fluid the seed gate and lever works great. The box and running gear are fine.

My question.

Has anyone used POR 15 for this type of application and how were your results.

I think it would work fine for a seeder. I have the Herd 750 sander that has a metal "club" that spins inside the hopper banging the sides pretty hard. When I got it it was rusted pretty badly from the fertilizer and salt left in it. I ended up just building the hopper out of new steel. If I was to do it again I would make it out of stainless and never need to worry about rust.

IMHO it will work well. I used it to recoat the frame of my electric ATV underneath the battery trays. That stuff is exceptionally tough and lays down (flows) in a very smooth, good looking coat. Follow their directions EXACTLY regarding pre-etch, wash, etc.

I've used POR-15, Eastwood chassis black and Eastwood rust converter all with fantastic results. My truck (2007) and trailers chassis all look like new with just a regular wash.

POR-15 will work well. Just be aware that it will fade to a grayish after a couple years of sun exposure. It won't harm the rust prevention characteristics though.

POR-15 requires a paint over coat.

Read the instructions! It is not a "top coat", and if left unprotected, rust will form under it.

IN TRUTH, Rust will come again in spite of your efforts.
