I have just built a 28x60x14 high pole structure that I have left the entire 28' span open on both ends. I did this so I could bring full length logs in on the tractor forks to process under cover.

I would like to put some type of doors on both gable ends so I can secure the building. I will have to build 2 14x14 doors and do a double track setup so I can slide both doors off to 1 side (I have a roadway on one side of the building I need to keep open).

I was wondering if anyone on here has any ingenious solutions they have used besides the conventional sliding door track (i.e. cheaper). I'm looking at approx. $650 for door track, trollies, hangers etc. for each end of the building if done conventionally.

Thanks.

I recently built a pole building with the two opposing sliding doors. With my set up I stuck with the store bought hardware because it always seems to work so darn good. My tracks are the round tubes with the rollers riding smoothly along inside the tubes. I know of no reASONo why you could not use a cheaper flat stock track rail'.

I have heard that birds like to make nests in the ends of those tubes however I have not has this happen yet.

Might look into aircraft hanger doors, the go up accordion style. I have read a few threads where guys do their that way so the doors are completely out of the way, but cheaper than a roll up, since it would be easier to fabricate yourself.

Here is an elaborate design.

I might be tempted to do 2 7 ft. doors each side and then they can overlap at the end and not stick out too far past the side of the building each side using the double track system. 1 7' door isn't as hard to slide as a 14'er, you may have to lock them together when closed but then you could still open them half way when you don't need the full width opening. Building a 28 ' bifold hangar style door would be too much project for me as it is bound to be heavy and you will need some kind of safe lift mechanism that won't let it drop it down on you:thumbdown: I not sure how these smaller ones work but in the big aircraft hangars that I work in there is a LOT of cable lifting up the doors, so you need power to open and close door. Sliders you can push/pull with the tractor and a rope. Our big A/C hangar doors actually roll on R/R track and have a guide at the top so they stand up and don't hang. A fancy cable setup opens/closes 4 section per side progressively. Think rolling gate VEE wheels on the bottom rolling on angle iron maybe.

I'm a big fan of metal roll up doors. My first one was 12x12 and that was great!!! This one is 10x10 and it's good, but if I ever build another shop, I'm going to go with the bigger door again.

Amen brother! I had bought a 10'10 roll up for my shop initially, then when I moved the shop location (pre build) I decided to make my own 12'x12'. 2' is a huge difference and I would have went 14x14 if I had built my shop taller. Now I have a 10x10 rollup sitting outside for the last 4 years attracting dust.

Can you talk a bit about how you made a roll-up door? I'm considering doors for my barn.

Thanks.

When I built my shop, I made the ceilings 9 foot 10" high and use a 8 foot standard home garage door. I can get my B26 inside it or my brother in laws NH 2030 with cab inside with a couple inches of clearance to spare. I put the insulated doors on and they help keep the weather out as needed whether hot or cold.
I know this doesn't help the OP as I have never seen a garage door wider than 18 feet (my widest is 16') but for others who just want to put in a door, this is about the cheapest way to go. Common 1/2 HP garage door openers raises and lowers all three of my doors, no high priced openers required and no tugging by hand or tractor to get them open.
